Those are definitely the two suspects. I bet the Plekanic rumor starts heating up. First trades would probably be with GM's other GM's are familiar with.

I wouldn't be so quick to trade one of those two simply because I like the progress of a college kid (Johns) and a kid right out of college (Clendenning). Both of those kids are going to need time to learn and get adjusted. Guess it pends on what the offers are.

So great to be talking hockey again.

If the Hawks do a deal, is their top priority a goalie or center?

Plekanec would be a nice add for the Hawks ... but the Habs have zero depth at center ... I can't imagine they'd move Plekanec leaving them with ? Desharnais? and ...? Woof.

Hoping Stan can line up a deal or two so once the CBA is ratified they can get their new players in camp to start building chemistry.

My top targets would be:

Burmistrov (Jets)
Statsny/O'Reilly (Avs)
Couterier (Flyers) <- highly doubt Philly trades him
Nielsen (Isles)
Gagner (Oilers)<-bottom basement selection with this one. He is an upgrade and had has chemistry with Kane, but don't see him as a good fit.

While this deal sounds mildly attractive, I don't really know if it improves the 'Hawks. Hjalmarsson is a proven NHL commodity. Not flashly, but can log second-pairing minutes, is positionally responsible, blocks a ton of shots, and "strategically" lays hits.

Bishop is 26, and never started more than 9 games in an NHL season. His highest season save percentage is .909. When placing him side by side with Crawford, he's two years younger, but Crawford has started 55 games twice in his NHL career, and has posted competant starting goalteder numbers in his best season effort (.914 SV%, 2.30 GAA). Not a Crawford defender or apologist, but although last season leaves such a sour taste, he has performed well across an NHL season before.

The larger point being, no one knows if Bishop is really any kind of upgrade, and it seems foolhardy to deal away a quality player for an asset that is - for all intents and purposes - an unknown. Dealing from depth just to deal isn't the right play. Dealing from depth to upgrade weaknesses is the key.

Now, if Bowman was able able to create some sort of Hjalmarsson/prospect package for Bishop and say, Zack Smith, then they might have something. Don't know how likely that is either, though.

Don't think we give the Hawks Couterier. Apparently the Flyers weren't willing to trade him in the Weber mess. Maybe Read. Good to finally talk about this type of hockey news.

just ship hammer to the island for Nabokov straight up. The isles dont look poised to make any kind of run this year and no shot Nabokov plays for them beyond this year, again. Time for NYI to start looking at the return for him, extremely unlikely they make playoffs before he becomes UFA

nah neither Leddy nor Hjarlmar...etc are worth Pleks sorry, for different reasons, sure we could use a player like Hjarlmar, but Leddy is an offensive D we have like 4 of those, and Hjarlmar isnt worth pleks straight up, not worth the loss at center

thats not gonna happen

Burmistrov - Doesn't fit the bill at all, other than being a left handed center. He's tiny, never tallied more than 28 points and his career high faceoff percentage is 44%. How you rank him higher than Gagner (who I also dislike) is difficult to understand. He looks like he fits the bill of the Russian stererotype - lots of skill, zero heart.

Stastny/O'Reilly - O'Reilly is the one I would covet. Big bodied, left handed center who wins draws and has decent playmaking ability. He's not an overly physical player (62 hit last year), but one really telling stat about him is his 50 blocked shots. Kid's got heart. I highly doubt the Avs are looking to move him after his career year last season, but he is an RFA at present, so who knows. I imagine he’s seeking a substantial payday right now.
Like Stastny as well, he’s cut from the same cloth as O’Reilly to a degree, with possibly higher offensive upside, although O’Reilly’s still young, so who knows. But, I highly doubt the ‘Hawks are looking to take on another $6M+ contract headed into next season’s reduced salary cap. My guess is that the Av’s will be more willing to move him than O’Reilly, but would have fewer interested parties due to the price tag.

Couterier - Like this kid a lot, but I think he’s a cornerstone of future plans in Philly. The asking price would be outlandish. I.e., Philly’s not moving him. At least until he signs a big contract, then he’s moved out of town for sure. 

Nielsen - I’m iffy on him. Undersized playmaking center with a decent price tag, although he is older. Although I’m not a huge proponent of judging a forward by +/-, he was a +13 in the 2010-11 season on an Islanders team that ranked 27th in goals allowed per game (3.15), so that’s saying something. Not great on faceoffs though, which is really what the ‘Hawks need.

Gagner - Don’t like him. Small, right-handed, soft, and horrible at faceoffs. He has a ton of ability, and one wonders if a change of scenery and system might allow him to flourish. He’s an RFA next season with a current price tag of $3.2M, so one wonders if the Oil might be willing to move him. Although nothing about him sounds appealing to me, there is something there that makes me slightly curious - if he were to have Kane or Hossa on his wing. I’d take him readily before Burmistrov, though.

Not a bad trade for either team...it would give them a chance to see if Poulin or Neilsen are ready. Knowing the Islanders they would probably want Leddy and someone else for Nabokov.
