Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Boucher Is $50K Insurance Policy; Laughton - bmeltzer
Good stuff, Bill.
With the abolition of re-entry waivers, the Flyers can utilize Boucher in case of injury without having to sweat the possibility of getting held up.
I wonder if the PA will grieve the cases of Gomez and Redden being told to stay home by the Habs and Rangers.
As for Laughton, if he returns to Oshawa, he'll likely be getting even more minutes if Boone Jenner ends up in Columbus, rather than staying in the OHL. I'd really hate to burn a year off Laughton's ELC for a 48 game season. |

Bill, something about this deal seems fishy to me. I can understand Carolina wanting to dump Boosh ...but why just throw in Alt when they are getting next to nothing in return? Is he that much of a project? From the sounds of it he sure sounds like he should have gone in the later rounds. Was he a stretch to take in the second round? Or was there a good reason he went that early?
I ask because I know the Canes GM has a rep of driving a hard bargin... but coming out of this with a 2nd round D prospect just seems totally out of left field. |

The Flyers did the 'Canes a favor in taking Boucher off their roster/cap. Peters had passed him and Dan Ellis comes in more cheaply. In fact, Ellis falls below the threshold for counting against the cap for the Canes, which makes me think that Ellis is going to fill the role in Carolina that Boucher is filling here, namely veteran AHL starter that can be recalled in case of emergency/injury.
The thing with Alt is, he's a long term project. His size and skating ability are very appealing, but he's struggled offensively this year in college. That said, he's not under contract and the Flyers fill a need in Boucher in exchange for a player that is currently loaned to an ECHL team and had no future here. |

We did Carolina a solid by taking an injured goalie and his salary....they had to sweeten the pot....we could have signed the goalie Carolina did for 300k less for our 3 string goalie.....Carolina needed to have a backup healthy and ready to play....I don't think boosh can be counted on right away and for big mins if ward goes down. Throw in a prospect that they haven't signed yet....life moves on.......maybe that's your answer, maybe he didn't want to sign in Carolina ..... So they moved him.....but I'm guessing it was depth and money. |

Gotta give the Flyers credit.. they are very loyal to players that are loyal to them. You don't see every team in the NHL doing what we do for players that once played for us.
Should be a fun year... i'm already liking the shortened season.

I believe Boucher will have to clear Waivers to be sent to the Phantoms. But that shouldn't be an issue. |

I think familiarity of the player, and knowing what kind of teammate he is, had something to do with it. But it filled a need in the Organization, or they wouldn't have traded for him just out of loyalty. |

The cap hit really isn't an issue. It would cost the Flyers 200K on the Cap, to waive him and send him to the Phantoms. I just get the feeling that they are going to keep him with the Flyers. |

I don\'t know what question you\'re asking here. I have no information as to what the team is going to do with Shelley. I could easily be wrong. I just get the feeling he stays with the big club. |

They\'ve kept him on the roster despite the cap hit the past two years. That probably doesn\'t change, unless an immediate need for his cap space arises. |
