It would be a mistake if the Oilers do not re-sign Ryan Jones and Lennart Petrell.
- laughs2907

Jones will most likely get re-signed. Petrell, i dunno, good penalty killer and 4th liner, still replaceable though.

so you really still convinced Schultz can beat out Tarasenko for the Calder?....that seems HIGHLY unlikely and i'm willing to bet on that....unless Schultz can lead his team in scoring...which Tarasenko is likely to do short of an injury i dont see how its gonna happen
- Habitants98

it's not as one sided as you think... schultz does so much more then any rookie is doing this year. Not only is he producing points, but he is also leading the team in ice time... playing against the oppositions top lines and doing a great job of it.

I wasn't expecting this out of schultz... but after seeing how he has handled the NHL, I think he might be the best dman to come into the league since Pietrangelo, and I have been super high on pietrangelo since he was a junior.

Regardless, we need a guy like Petrell... Either re-sign him or get someone exactly like him.

Actually, I still am.

Tarasenko is brilliant, don't get me wrong. I think Cory Conacher has past him in the scoring race. Maybe he's a better lock to win than Tarasenko?

Schultz will be evaluated by a different standard because he's a defenseman. If he puts in a 30 point season and continues to play in the Oilers top pairing all season, he'll win...especially if the Oilers find themselves in a playoff spot. Schultz is more important to the Oilers than Tarasenko is to the Blues.

I like for Jones and Petrell to be resigned. Jones to OTT for Bishop?...I hold that thought until Dubnyk and EDM passes the 20-25 game mark.

A few articles in Hockey News web site stating how many teams struggling early in the season are seeking for scoring help. I wouldn't be surprised if EDM gets calls on their forwards.

Umm Clout's you said this in your blog "IV. Players the Oilers Would Be Most Open to Moving
Theo Peckham, Ryan Whitney, Corey Potter, Darcy Hordichuk, Linus Omark, Shawn Horcoff, and a number of low-to-mid range prospects."

Shouldn't it read "Players I think the Oilers would be most open to moving".?
Or do you have some inside info and know what the Oilers brass are thinking?

Please explain how, even if it was allowed, it would make any (frank)ing sense whatsoever to buy out Horcoff then resign him lower?

So they could have him for next two seasons for 4 mill next year and 3 mill the year after. 7 mill for the next 2 seasons. So they buy him out (which would be at 100% of his contract) then resign him for 2 mill? So they now end up paying him 9 mill for one more year?

If they buy him out, its because they want him gone.

Think cap hit. Horcoff's actual buyout number is $4.7mil. His cap hit is a combined $11mil for the last two years of his contract. If you were to buy him out and then sign him for $2mil per, the actual amount is down to $8.7mil. While it might sound like the player wouldn't want that, I think Horcoff hates how fans bash him over his contract. He'd win the love of many fans if he willingly took a pay cut.

Keep in mind his compliance buyout would not appear on the Oilers cap, so the $5.5mil that is currently there could be turned into $2mil per.

As a Burgh fan, I would offer up a minor deal for whitney. The oilers are gonna be a team to behold in 2 years, but they need to gell yet. the pens should offer a 2nd and bortuzzo for whitney. lets see if edm bites

Isn't his buyout cap hit approximately $9M over the next four seasons as per capgeek.com?

Na Think if Whitney is on your 3rd pairing then your defense isn't doing too bad.

He's a RW, EDM definitely has to trade one of the "untouchables"...I would say Yakupov++ for Perry.

I would consider that deal if EDM has no long term plans or short term use for Whitney. It's a fair deal. I would love to see Dumoulin or Morrow or Maata and forget the 2nd round pick.

I agree. I don't see a lot of reason to trade him for a Prospect and pick. I would rather trade him and a pick for another veteran who can play top 4. Or even keep him if he will sign for less.
