There are very few NHL teams that can reach into their AHL team and replace a top line player. When Pittsburgh had Crosby out, they had Jordan Staal assume a bigger role.
- Jsaquella

Your right...its hard to replace a crosby or malkin.....typically you would promote guys on the team and swap the lesser role with your ahl player....

They should be able to have one guy come in and be able to fill in Mezy spot besides friegin lilja, foster, and gervais.... that means we dont have any other defenseman in the system that they view as NHL caliber....were in big trouble.

There would be no point in making any of these deals. It would be like throwing the baby out with the bathwater from the Flyers standpoint.
- MBFlyerfan

I will be a bit disappointed if we don't sell something at the trade deadline. We'll get more for people now versus right before the draft. I am happy we aren't buying though, and happy that we aren't gutting our core (at least not yet).

Not an upgrade over Gervais or Foster?
- Flyersgod

Not really, and a lot more expensive.

I'm not saying we should have made these trades. Never once. I was amazed at how little the pens have to give up to get what they want.

He was a machine. I remember SI did a 15 page article on it, they had it going 8 rounds and said that Spinks would dance and make Tyson work...I couldn't eat a Chicken McNugget in the amount of time it took Tyson to kill Spinks.
- Jsaquella

True story:

1990 - the future Mrs. Wedgie and I had gone out for a "nice dinner" while at university (in Kingston, Ontario). So we are walking back from the restaurant, wondering what to do for the evening. We walk by one of the more popular bars in downtown Kingston - typical dance bar, but they did have a little room up front which was their sports bar. The sandwich board out front said they had the Tyson-Douglas fight on - cover of (iirc) $5.

So I say to the future Mrs. Wedgie, "How about you let me watch Tyson punch out this tomato can - shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, and then we will go to the dance bar." She agreed.

After one round, I ran to the pay phone (kids: there was a time when we didn't have cell phones) and phoned my university housemates - you have to get down here right now - Tyson is going to lose. One guy said he couldn't be bothered, the other guy hoped in a car and was at the bar for the start of round 4.

So the fight is unbelievable, of course. But the bar was pretty empty - nobody had cared about the fight. At the end, me, the future Mrs. Wedgie and my buddy are jumping up and down, screaming, high fiving each other - one of the most exciting sporting events I've ever watched.

And then the bartender turns the TVs (all of them!) to a hockey game. WTF?!?!?!

I plead with him - this is the greatest upset in boxing history - can we please watch the post-fight interviews and analysis?

The bartender says, "sorry, but the way our satellite system works, we can't show two different things - we only have one receiver.

"And see that old guy sitting in the corner? That's Kirk Muller's dad, and he wants to watch his son play hockey. "

Exactly. So saying that the Flyers don't have the assets to make a trade for a player like Iginla, that's been posted earlier, isn't the case.
- MJL

the problem is who is going to replace the prospects you have just traded away?

You are all missing my point. I even said there was no point. Read the post for christ sake.

The point is, we always have to give more to get what we want. Always.

Shero made some great deals without overpaying. I get your point.

They did a poor job in landing defensive depth this past summer. No question.

That said, if they played a system more in tune with what's on the roster, the defensive issues are mitigated.

Unless Iginla has some kind of insane craving for cheesesteaks, why the hell would he want to come here???

Murray wasn't on their radar because they have 4 guys that do what he does. He's a stay at home defenseman, who is questionable positionally, has few puck skills and has been terrible this year for San Jose.
- Jsaquella

And it really, really hurts me to say this, but here goes:

Iggy isn't the same guy he used to be.

If he plays with Crosby or Malkin his numbers will look good, but if they put him on the third line (as rumoured) Pens fans should get ready for disappointment.

That really, really hurt to type.

So, now Systems are important now?

I've harped on systems from the get go, and not one of you's agreed with me.

You make changes to your system to fit the players you have.

He is in no way what we need. He's not a puck mover top pairing dman.

Was a 1st round pick and 2 unsigned draft picks for the pens.

What was the rumor regarding the Flyers? What were they asking from us?

Assuming Iggy gets re-signed in Pittsburgh, doesn't that mean Letang is out the door?

There's the problem. We see Gervais and Foster as an issue. But instead of replacing them, we only talk about getting a top pairing dman.

There are none to be had for the price we are willing to pay. So fix what you have and continue the search when there are options available.

It's just a hair less than they are paying Gustafsson, Gervais and Foster combined, and Murray would be redundant.

He's a slow, stay at home, physical defenseman who has a bad habit of blowing coverage.

The highly respected Sharks blog www.fearthefin.com rejoiced at getting rid of him and was ecstatic at the return. They said that Murray had been the Sharks worst defensemen for the past two years.

I agree systems also play a big role...Lavy's system as we have all seen, shows more holes than you would see at a asian massage parlor...

It would be nice to be able to call up a young guy to come fll a role, rather than relying on the likes of Lilja, gervais, foster.

Nothing. Iggy was never coming to Philadelphia because he's an impending UFA. We're not making the playoffs, so what's the point of trading away future assets for the guy who is not going to help? Iggy to Philly makes no sense whatsoever.
