Well remember that last season Luke Schenn was in nearly the same position on the same exact team. Him and Gardiner are nearly the same defenseman with the exception of their handedness, and they're style (Schenn is more defensive, proficient offensively;Gardiner is more offensive, proficient defensively). Other than that, they're age, height, team, potential, position on team (stuck at the bottom), position with the fans (Schenn was disliked there, Gardiner is disliked there), position with coaches (not good), are all the same. He's Luke Schenn #2. Would you say Luke Schenn was a solution to anything last year when he was barely on their lineup? Jake Gardiner had 30 points in 75 games last year. At age 21 . This year he's had a sophmore clump (as our dear Coots has), and the fans have all but condemned him to death, his coaching staff has all but decided to throw away his career (he's been a healthy scratch all season, not an AHLer, they haven't tried to develop him more, they've just sat him on the bench. I think someone needs to liberate him, or his career will most likely be wasted there. If we can free him, and only give up a mid aged, top 6 player who can be replaced by Brayden Schenn quite easily, plus a midaged dman that no one really wants here anymore, and be overpaying, then I really think we should do it. - JAKEw1234
Gardener isn't disliked... If you listen to Toronto 590 the actually ripping Carlyle a little bit about that

Dude, we could get a great AHL defenseman! - Jsaquella
frank was also cranking the bus for yandle during the segment i referred to earlier. then he said something about read being expendable as if that would be enuf to get a deal done. |

An argument could be made that for next season Read may be the most valuable player on the team factoring in production vs cap hit. Lets trade him!

If he can land a top defenseman, I'd be somewhat willing, but the value of Read in terms of cap vs production is a really nice asset. |

Pretty much.... Gardiner should be playing he's better than at least one guy in their top 6 |

it's really a quandary cause, you're right, he's a valuable guy who plays in all situations...very good 3rd liner, fairly good 2nd liner and an excellent value. |

if the icelanders win this game do the mighty pens go to vokun? it appears as if fluery has developed a playoff problem over the past 2 years, i guess the pens are going to have to score at least 5 goals per game to compensate for fluery. |

Especially with the cap going down so much next season.
And if the stories and speculation is true about the cap going right back up to where it was or more the season after next.....Maybe they can resign him after all.
And yes, if there is a top defenseman coming the other way you have to think about moving him. But then, it would be quite possible that the cap disparity between Read and a top defenseman coming back means you are also moving other assets and creating more holes that need to be filled in order to be cap compliant.

Buying out Briere should create enough room to add a very solid defenseman |

Looked a little like that goal off the boards that Mason had in a late series 0-1 loss. Can't remember against who.
Good to see Flurrys playoff mentality is back and kicking. |

A few thoughts.
I am willing to bet nobody here wants to part ways with such power forwards as Scott Hartnell or Wayne Simmonds and you can include me as one of those fans. I do however look at the line up the Edmonton Oilers have with plenty of young skill. Some of it they may need to use to acquirea power forward type. The Flyer and Edmonton would both benefit from a Simmonds for Eberle trade for example or Hartnell for Gagner. Again I wouldn't do it possible or not, but I do see that both sides desperately needs what the other has.
Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Gagne-Schenn-Simmonds
Talbot-Couturier-Read
Rosehill-Laughton-Rinaldo
As it stands I project we look like this and we do have a reasonable line up but we still need that sure fire skill up front or else we may miss the playoffs a second time. We just need to add.
