I'd be more willing to go off the board on the forward side of things.

I'm fine with Zubrus coming back. The Flyers stunk, puck possession wise, and if Zubrus helps with that, I'm on board.

Besides.....think of all those people that invested in Zubrus jerseys so many years ago. They get to break them out again.

The fan store will be able to trot out some old style Flyers Zubrus jerseys.

I think it's one thing to do that when you're first round pick is in the 20's.

It's another at pick 11.

I hope they don't draft Gauthier with that first pick, as is rumored by Craig Button. If they like him so much, find a way to trade up or something to get him later in the draft.

Or trade out of 11 to get more draft picks.

Either way, I hope they don't reach at 11.

Zubrus would be a nice add -- 35+ would scare me, though, especially as he's entering the dreaded power-forward window of decline.

Zubrus is intriguing, but it's a shame he's not a faceoff guy.

Does Zubrus work on the PK?

If they feel strongly on a player they take him. At 11 I personally would consider Bo Horvat & Curtis Lazar with a real outside shot on Kerby Rychel.

Shinkaruk sounds a lot like a player I know....hmmmmm...Briere!

Yes, lets get him to replace Briere, eh?

#sarcasm

I would take Nichuskin if he fell and then Poluck if he fell. After that I'm not totally sold on anyone and might consider trading down.

Thanks for the blogging Bill. Your thoughts are a great way to start the day.

Happy Friday, Bill. Thanks for your blogs ... it makes a playoff-less year just a bit easier.

I've always hated David Clarkson ... which is exactly why I'd love to have him on the Flyers. More than Clowe, for sure.

Zubs? Seems like a year to year signing as a stop gap to me. Not opposed but not ecstatic either.

Clowe is all but a lock to be targeted it is just the way of the Flyers. If they give him a long term (above 4 years) and high cap hit (above 4.5) I will freak out. Even those #s are inflated but it is a UFA signing so I expect him to be totally overpaid.

What kind of contract do you think Clarkson will get? I agree with you...

Yup, Clarkson is one of "those" athletes that we all hate when the other team has him, but will rush out to buy his jersey the second he does for our team what he used to do against us all those years.

Bill, your quote:

"Ryan is basically a slightly better version of James van Riemsdyk with a couple extra years of experience. "

???

4 - 30 goal seasons,
points of 71 64 & 57 in only 64 games.

slightly better?

not sure why these boards make Ryan out to be such an average player?

sounds like a well thought out plan along the lines of chip kelly's football manifesto.

Yes, a slightly better player at this point. JVR scored at a 30-goal pace this year after the lockout, and was just under that pace in the first six weeks of last season before a slew of injuries basically ruined his season.

Ryan isn't an "average" player. He's a very good player, despite a down year this season after the lockout. He'll go out and get his 30-some goals again next year if healthy. But he's not a superstar. He doesn't always use his size to his advantage, he is streaky and just adequate defensively. Also, he would not be likely to produce dramatically more playing with Giroux and Voracek than he has with Getzlaf and Perry as his primary linemates. He is what he is: a fine player who has some limitations and is not someone for whom it would make sense to expend all your most valuable trading assets to acquire.

JvR is a good player. To say that Ryan is slightly better is not exactly saying he's average.

zubrus has been paid pretty handsomely considering his production. i'd be wary- don't overspend and term no longer than 2yrs. otherwise forget it.

It's about measuring up each player currently. Bill is right. Not sure why these baords make Ryan out to be the star that he is not.
