As stupid as this seems, I wouldn't mind the Flyers coming back with this D core. If there's no top end talent out there available in a trade, whats the bother. It doesnt make sense to go get another 2nd pairing dman at the expense of Lauridsen/Gustaffson's potential ice time. We can always make a deal next season....
I'd like to dump Mez for a 2nd round pick in this draft, and resign Huskins for depth

Maybe it is a reasonable to do this
Step 1) Hold onto Brayden Schenn and Couturier, Schenn has great offensive upside, Couturier with a great defensive upside, as well as good offensive.
Step 2) Draft Ryan Pulock
Step 3) Trade Matt Read, Mezaros, 3rd round pick (2013), 2nd round pick (2014) for Jake Gardiner. They hate him and won't play him, so maybe we can pull another Luke Schenn thing.
Step 4) Move Brayden to the LW for Coots, filling Reads spot in the top 6
Step 5) Keep Coburn in his simpler, defensive role. He plays sufficiently there.
Step 6) Keep simpler defensive system used at the end of this season.
Step 7) Develop, develop, develop.
Step 8) After Timonen retires, keep him around the locker room.
Step 9) Call up Lauridsen, after 1 more season in the AHL he should be nice and NHL ready. Experiment with Pulock to see if close to NHL ready.
Step 10) Have Timonen and Prongs mentor the young D men. Timonen teaches the more offensive young-tykes (Gus, Gardin, Pulock) how to be smart with the puck (I think he might have the best hockey IQ in the league). Have Prongs teach the big'uns (Lauri, Luke) how to be intimidating and play mean, while maintaining disciplined and defensive styles.
Now defense has been successfully made younger, and if developed right, better than ever. Our D Corps by 2014-15 season:
Gardin - Luke
Gus - Coburn
Pulock - Lauri
Does this sound feasible to everyone else? - JAKEw1234
Not sold on giving up that much for Gardiner.

I agree with your premise. Don't get involved in a long term deal for a any kind of stop gap. Make the right deal. Rather pass then settle for less then you really want. But I think it's most likely that Lauridsen is in the AHL next Season.
And I'm certainly not giving Meszaros away for a 2nd round pick. |

That was just an example, trade, we probably wouldn't even have to give that much for him, but I imagine Read going in the deal. |

Oh and if Pulock isn't ready we keep Grossmann around and for 14-15 our D is
Gardin- Luke
Gus - Coburn
Gross - Lauri
That last pair sounds intimidating

Clarkson could make Hartnell redundant. I can't see any scenario in which Simmer isn't on this team for many years to come. - FlyerGuy
to have one of hartnell, clarkson, simmonds, and rinaldo out at all times...
we'd be very hateable |

Considering he has had 3 serious injuries in the last year or so, a 2nd is most likely all you could get for him |

I think with the Cap going down to 64.3M. Read is a player you should hold onto.

Yeah, I'm definetly getting rid of Mez for a 2nd in a deep draft. Open up some cap room. We'll see with Lauridsen, I think he sticks |

Flyers know that they need more mobility and puck movement in the lineup. Adding Lauridsen makes the Flyers defense even more slanted towards stay at home defensive defenseman then it was this past Season.
If he can get healthy, Meszaros is a solid NHL defenseman. You'd be trading him for a draft pick in which the player may or may not see the NHL. And could be a number of years from seeing the NHL. There is more value to keeping him, or including him in a package deal.

Maybe, but there's something to be said for opening up that cap space/contract slot. A package deal would be great. I have my doubts on if Mez can get healthy for next year. |

Only if you do something with that Cap space/contract slot. Meszaros basically didn't play last Season. Well if you look at the UFA list for defenseman, where would Meszaros rank on it if he was a UFA? I have doubts about his health also. But if he can get healthy and stay that way. That's a boost to the blueline.

Ha well we gonna have to give something up to add something. And even if we do draft Pulock, he won't be NHL ready when Kimmo retires. We'll have a major gap on D. But don't worry, at least we'll still have Read though. |

And all the players that you've mentioned over the last week, including the defenseman du jour, Gardiner, are going to fill that gap left when Timonen retires?
A player who can't currently crack the lineup is going to do that?
I'm not against trading a young player for the right player. |

The question was hypothetical. Where would a healthy Meszaros rank on the UFA list this year for defenseman?
I realize there are serious questions about his health. That is the gamble and the risk that needs to be figured out.

Bill, thoughts on Dallas at 10? Probably the one team in the top 10 I have zero clue of what they may do. Best overall player or specific need?
Maybe trade down even? - hereticpride
Nill is definitely a best available player believer. |
