So would this mean that the DP era is officially over? You figure either Poulin or Nilsson will back up the #1 starter and the other will go down to BP and be the #1 with Reiter backing up. That leaves DP as the odd man out. Am I missing something? |

He hasn't had to trade anyone, just because we would like a trade, doesn't mean he has to make one.. but just because he hasn't, doesn't mean he lacks the ability.
XxNYIxX - XxNYIxX
WTF are you talking about??? He "HASN'T" had to make a trade? WHAT???????
Is he Bill Torrey in 1981? HE didn't have to make any trades.
We missed playoff for 6 years and got bounced our last two appearances in the 1st round.
Garth has said last two summers, "We have the assets to go out and get that impact player that will take us to the next level." I'm sorry, is Brad Boyes THAT player he spoke of?
All talk. No action. Not because HE DIDN'T HAVE TO, but BECAUSE HE SUCKS AT IT. Are you blind...or something else?
That's almost as bad as the person(i think Jimmy/Shamwow) who defended Cappy as the Islanders 2nd most winning coach? Because at his current rate, it should only take about 57 full seasons for Cappy to tie Arbour in Wins. (playoffs not included)

What's the story with retirement under the new CBA? I know if you trade a large contract and that player retires, the old team has to deal with the cap hit...but if DP were to retire, would his cap hit still count against the Isles? With the relationship he has with Wang, it really wouldn't surprise me if they work something out where he retires from the active roster and gets a similar-paying job somewhere in the organization. I just see an in-house solution like that coming about before I see them dumping him on some other team just to be unceremoniously bought out, while losing valuable prospects in the process. If not, I think a buyout is the next most likely option, with Wang getting some help from his new Barclays masters...err...partners to foot the bill. |

the team was so depleted that even if the islanders traded sparky for sidney crosby, they still wouldnt have made the playoffs... you dont trade for the sake of trading. garth played it smart, he didnt make any knee jerk trades bc he felt pressured. he stayed the course, re stocked the farm system and NOW is in GREAT shape to make trades/field a solid team that can last for years!!
your system would have made the islanders a perennial 9-10th seed team; the isles are starting to become a force thatll be competing for top 5 finishes for years to come... |

No..if he retires as an Islander, the contract is void. What you're saying is what I was sort of referring to earlier. I think given the possiblity of making his $1.5 mil as an employee with the team as opposed to getting it through his buyout, he may choose that route.

I think DP is the odd man out, but they had 3 goalies down there last year too.
Reiter played 13 games while Nilsson was out with his injury & DP pretty much replaced Poulin, But DP, Nilsson & Reiter were there all at the same time at the end.
Who knows with this franchise!!
We HOPE it's the end

Lubo for a 2nd rounder...pretty good deal.
Although he left, the Smyth trade was a significant or 'impactful' deal.
James Wisniewski for a third...
I would say all three of those deals were 'impact' trades at the time, though Wiz turned out to be a jerk that we got rid of FAST.
Tough to grade a guy on his *trade* history when this franchise had literally NOTHING to trade for his first 3 years or so.
Snkeaner17oW - keaner17
Taking on other teams "garbage" is not a trade. A player for player trade. Not cap relief or a team looking to get rid of a pending UFA. Not a waiver pick up. C'mon, don't be stupid. You know what I mean.

The only thing you are basing this comment on is the end result from an outsiders point of view. I'm not saying he IS great at it, but we have no idea what types of demands he's encountered in the market for a trade. The overall approach has been to remain patient and not search for quick fixes. That result appears to be paying off thus far. This offseason as well as the next trade deadline will be big moments for Garth. I don't expect him to make a huge trade, nor does he have to. I simply want continued improvement. If the team falters and he's still unable to seemingly right the ship, then we have concerns about his ability to trade. Until then, your rants seem a bit overboard.

How's the tattoo on Garth's taint look from where you're standing?
Former valued prospects. You're all right. He's the greatest GM ever. Time will tell. Just own up to how you defended him when Tavares leaves the team having never reached the 2nd round of playoffs. |

This isn't EA sports where you throw five low grade prospects together and turn it into Steven Stamkos. I'm glad he hasn't made any big trades thus far. I'd rather we keep doing this organically as it seems to be the safest and most economically feasible way to sustain success over a long period of time rather than trading to be good for 3 years and then suffer after.
