Yeah its just too much money on the back end. Even with Kimmo retiring in a year. Too much salary to carry for 6 dmen, 1 who might be a healthy scratch. I just think that this is it for Mez. He's gone for a can of beans. Either he's gone or you go into next year completely cap strapped (even with the CBO's) and possibly hurting Gus's development - Just5
I wonder if we have to give up something to dump Mesz salary? |

They wouldn't have given away a pick or prospect if they weren't planning on signing him and its obvious he wants 3+ although I don't think he should get it |

I'm thinking Timonen might have to be paired with Coburn agains after seeing how much Coburn struggled without a good defensive player paired with him. - NickTheKid87
Coburns issues were more about trying to be a puck mover after being the defensive guy for so long. |

There's that too but he's performed better historically while playing with a partner that is good in his own end (i.e. Timonen and Grossmann and not Gervais). |

Please continue.... where would you put him and why? - coffee junkie
You have to look at matchups. I would not play Streit with Luke Schenn for that reason. Flyers have to identify what pairing they're going to play against top lines when they can. I'd play Schenn with Timonen. And put Streit probably with Grossmann. |

Clitsome for one. A role-playing D but then you pay a role-player price instead of a premium. They could also stay in-house see what Gustafsson can do over a full season. - bmeltzer
I wanted them to do this last year. I like what he brings to the table.
why couldn't trading be as easy as NHL 13.
My D consists of:
Weber - Chara
Schenn - Timonen
Fowler - Voynov |

The Flyers being an aggressive team is accurate. Streit's mobility and passing ability will help there. They didn't replace Matt Carle's skill set and tried to shoe horn players not as adept at those skills as Carle. Streit will replace those skills and then some.
. - johndewar
Agreed. Streit is a much more dynamic puck mover vs Carle, as he's a guy who is able to pass or skate the puck out of the zone with aplomb. He has a higher skill level and can make moves around opposing players and bring it into the offensive zone and distribute, as well as set up for good shots from the point (significantly better than Carle's shot). Defensively Streit is below average, where Carle is about average. I can see pairing him with Grossmann and giving him PP time and deploying him in certain offensive situations. While not a replacement, Streit improves the blueline mix and buys the Flyers more time to address the things longer term with Timonen expiring soon. I am hoping for 3 yr max should they sign him. |

My only thought right now, is that if this deal is 4 years or so. Then they should've signed Carle last year. While Carle does not have the point shot, or isn't as dynamic offensively as Streit. Carle is every bit as good as a puck mover as Streit is, if not better. And Carle is easily superior to Streit defensively. As well as being considerably younger. And Carle is a better overall player. |

I'd put Streit on the 2nd pairing with Coburn. Prefer Gus with Grossmann.
Flyers had a deal with Carle. He and his agent backed out of it once he hit free agency. |

I think I got:
Weber (Nashville accepted 4 1st rounders) - Seth Jones
Voynov - Carlson
Gustafsson - Grossmann
And apparently Simon Bertilsson wants $4.2M as an RFA. |

I don't believe that to be true. Holmgren may have thought that a deal was going to be easy to get done, and that Carle was willing to agree to a less then market deal. But I don't beleive that there was ever an agreed upon deal in place. Flyers left Carle hanging and wanted him to wait. Meanwhile TB jumped in and made their offer.
I'd be fine with that pairing. |

Word on the street was that the Flyers and Carle had a verbal agreement, but once Wideman got that crazy contract from Calgary, his agent and he backed out. Oh well, over and done. Maybe we'll reacquire him for a former 1st rounder and a 6th defenseman. |
