Word on the street was that Holmgren felt there was a deal to be done. I never saw any factual information that stated that a deal was in place.

And are you normally privy to this type of information?

I'm thinking it is going to be 4 @ $5.5. This will put him at the same age as Kimmo when his contract ends next year. He isn't quite the player Kimmo has been, but would argue he is an upgrade to Carle. Would have liked to have him when the Islanders got him. I'm thinking:

Kimmo - Coburn
Streit - Schenn
Grossman - Gus/Mez

The following year Kimmo is gone, Gus has another year under his belt, and Mez or Gus plays with Coburn.

- section32

Gawd, I hope it isn't 4 years. I'd prefer less years and a bigger cap hit like 2 yrs at $6M per but I think it will be 3 at 5.5 just because it's a compromise between the two extremes.

I agree with putting Streit on the 2nd pairing to keep him from other team's top lines while still giving him plenty of TOI to utilize his puck moving skills.

He's certainly an upgrade to Carle as far as total point production, and as far as a point shot and PP point man. He's not an upgrade at even strength. And certainly not defensively.

That's why it was word on the street. There usually aren't printed facts to support them.
- jmatchett383

Actually, what Holmgren said was he expected to re-sign Carle, for under market value. He should have done so during the season, before re-signing Grossmann, because that was the deal that made Carle's deal impossible to do in season.

But as soon as Wideman signed, any prayer of Homer getting Carle below market value dried up like a slug in a salt mine

I'll be glad to look at any information you have from a credible source that the Flyers had an agreed upon deal in place with Carle. Verbal or otherwise.

Well where does the word on the street come from? If there was a deal in place, he would've remained a Flyer.

Yay, trying to fill a position of weakness without giving up more than a 4th round pick and a career minor leaguer.

OK, here's my take on Streit:

Cons:

-(frank)ing hate trading assets for rights. Hate it like ass flavored ice cream.

-Obviously the over 35 situation makes me leery. The Flyers seem to be the kid who needs third degree burns to stop toughing the damned stove.

-Streit isn't exactly a great two way defenseman.

Pros:

-Streit is an exceptional puck mover, and still has good wheels at age 35.

-He does fill a major need at a rather insignificant cost(asset wise)

-in regards to likely cap hit, ANYBODY they traded for was likely to have a fairly large cap hit, unless it was a reclamation project such as Jamie McBain or similar young defenseman.

-PP. Streit is an exceptional PP quarterback.

I can see Streit slotted into a second pair role, playing with Coburn and it looks solid on paper.

- Jsaquella

All good points...although IF he is signed it minimizes the pain of the asset trade to nothing. If not...he's another Hamhuis / Nabokov. So I get the risk. The over 35 a la Pronger can bite you. But with Kimmo being gone after next year I am glad to have someone of his skill level and leadership experience on the club.

I'm going to have to assume that talks for other available D required a significant asset going the other way. This couldn't have been the first choice. This had to be just inside the top ten.

If nothing else (given what the yrs and rate will be on this contract) it buys Erik Gustafsson, Brandon Manning, Shayne Gostisbehere, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Oliver Lauridsen and Mark Alt time to develop a little more without having to rush them and that's a positive.

I'm not crazy about the 4th round pick but he hasn't signed yet so I'll fret that on the 30th (wonder what happens if he's still unsigned July 1).

I think they announced the signing as soon as they do the buyouts. Of course, if they have a taker for Meszaros and can get it done before the buyouts start, they may announce it sooner
