If I knew where these leaked but unconfirmed reports came from, I'd have my own rumors blog. So I don't know.

Exactly my point. So how credible is it? And what do we know that actually did happen?

Matt Carle signed with Tampa Bay for 6 years for 33M

How does that prove that he didn't have a verbal agreement with the Flyers that changed after the Wideman deal?

It's as credible as anything not put in writing on a press release approved by the NHL (when NHL news in concerned).

I'm going to have to assume that talks for other available D required a significant asset going the other way. This couldn't have been the first choice. This had to be just inside the top ten.

If nothing else (given what the yrs and rate will be on this contract) it buys Erik Gustafsson, Brandon Manning, Shayne Gostisbehere, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Oliver Lauridsen and Mark Alt time to develop a little more without having to rush them and that's a positive.

I'm not crazy about the 4th round pick but he hasn't signed yet so I'll fret that on the 30th (wonder what happens if he's still unsigned July 1).

My guess is that they looked at a handful of younger guys, the price was Couturier + and they said (frank) it, get a Timonen "replacement" and we'll ride out the season.

He's certainly an upgrade to Carle as far as total point production, and as far as a point shot and PP point man. He's not an upgrade at even strength. And certainly not defensively.
- MJL

But not the turnover machine Carle has been prone to be.

All good points...although IF he is signed it minimizes the pain of the asset trade to nothing. If not...he's another Hamhuis / Nabokov. So I get the risk. The over 35 a la Pronger can bite you. But with Kimmo being gone after next year I am glad to have someone of his skill level and leadership experience on the club.

Street/Straight is nowhere close to Timo's skill or leadership level. If by experience, you mean out of warranty, I agree.

How does it not? The only deal you really have is one that is put on paper and signed. Otherwise there is only discussion. It's pretty clear that the Flyers made Carle wait, and he wasn't the top priority. If Carle had agreed to a deal in principle with Holmgren, I believe he would still be here.

He's 35, not 38 like Kimmo who will be 39 for his final year. A for year deal puts him at the same age as Kimmo at the end of this last extension. And he is a good skating puck mover.

Agree on defensive skill but offensively he's right there with Timonen and IMO has a better shot even. On leadership, he was the Isles captain the last 3 yrs so he's not chopped liver in that department.

Stop. He would get way more than that when FA opens. Good D men are at a ridiculous premium. This will be $5.5 or more for at least 3 if not 4 years.

And I believe he wouldn't based on the Wideman deal.

http://www.broadstreethoc...gency-2012-dennis-wideman
-"Paul Holmgren is on the record saying he believes Carle will sign in Philadelphia under market value, and there's a possibility that Carle and the Flyers already have a agreement in place. The only reason the Flyers cannot sign a deal with Carle pre-July 1 is tagging space, but that's really just a formality. But even if the Flyers did have an agreement in place with Carle, he and his agent would be silly not to rip that up and start over. Not after the Flames just gave more than $5 million per year to Dennis Wideman."

http://www.delcotimes.com...febd67508eca291675277.txt
- "General manager Paul Holmgren has said he's pretty confident he'll not only be able to re-sign Carle on the first day of free agency Sunday, but he'll be able to do so at a “hometown discount.” Speculation was Carle would perhaps go for a contract averaging about $4.5 million a year instead of an optimistic estimate of about $5 million per season. But Wideman, whose rights were worth a fifth-round draft choice from the Flames to the Caps, drew more than that from Hershey-bred GM Jay Feaster and his masters. And the commitment was on a longer term contract than what anyone might have expected. Expect that hometown discount to stay in place for the Flyers if they sign on Matt Carle. But don't be surprised if the numbers just changed a bit. "

Again, as I said, word on the street. Nothing confirmed. All I said was that it was word on the street, not that I knew it for sure.
