My guess is that they looked at a handful of younger guys, the price was Couturier + and they said (frank) it, get a Timonen "replacement" and we'll ride out the season.

Reasonable assumption.

Agree on defensive skill but offensively he's right there with Timonen and IMO has a better shot even. On leadership, he was the Isles captain the last 3 yrs so he's not chopped liver in that department.

Streit gives the Flyers a PP point shot that they were lacking. That other teams will have to respect.

In canned quotes from Flyers, Streit says he's "pretty confident" he'll sign.

Mark Streit on possibly signing with PHI: "I'm pretty confident. ... It'd be awesome to play for the Flyers."

And I believe he wouldn't based on the Wideman deal.

http://www.broadstreethoc...gency-2012-dennis-wideman
-"Paul Holmgren is on the record saying he believes Carle will sign in Philadelphia under market value, and there's a possibility that Carle and the Flyers already have a agreement in place. The only reason the Flyers cannot sign a deal with Carle pre-July 1 is tagging space, but that's really just a formality. But even if the Flyers did have an agreement in place with Carle, he and his agent would be silly not to rip that up and start over. Not after the Flames just gave more than $5 million per year to Dennis Wideman."

http://www.delcotimes.com...febd67508eca291675277.txt
- "General manager Paul Holmgren has said he's pretty confident he'll not only be able to re-sign Carle on the first day of free agency Sunday, but he'll be able to do so at a “hometown discount.” Speculation was Carle would perhaps go for a contract averaging about $4.5 million a year instead of an optimistic estimate of about $5 million per season. But Wideman, whose rights were worth a fifth-round draft choice from the Flames to the Caps, drew more than that from Hershey-bred GM Jay Feaster and his masters. And the commitment was on a longer term contract than what anyone might have expected. Expect that hometown discount to stay in place for the Flyers if they sign on Matt Carle. But don't be surprised if the numbers just changed a bit. "

Again, as I said, word on the street. Nothing confirmed. All I said was that it was word on the street, not that I knew it for sure.

I think were on the same page here. Holmgren may have had preliminary talks and felt a deal could be made. But it's obvious that there was no agreed upon deal in place. Verbal or otherwise. Regardless, it really doesn't matter now.

So would you say Streit is turning over the puck bringing it out and Carle is turning it over being more reckless and therefore putting them in worse positions?

i would say that stat is useless because Jagr used to lead the league in giveaways not because he was bad but because he was always trying to make things happen on offense

Word on the street was that Holmgren felt there was a deal to be done. I never saw any factual information that stated that a deal was in place.

I think the thing with Carle is that his turnovers tended to be of the glaring kind...where he would only make one bad play a game, but based on the role he was playing, it usually ended up in a scoring chance or kept the Flyers pinned deep since a lot of his plays originated in the defensive zone trying to transition to forwards in the neutral zone.

I'd hope that Streit's turnovers are a result of him carrying the puck more often than Carle (so time with puck as opposed to TOI) and that most of them occur in the neutral zone as opposed to the defensive zone.

Here's the bottom line with puck movers like Carle and Streit. When you handle the puck as much as they do, there is going to be giveaways.

Everybody had the same information. Holmgren was putting out the message that it was just a formality, and apparently thought that Carle would wait. He was apparently wrong.

Source indicates Streit "likely" to sign with Flyers, but Philly needs to shed salary first. Have to wait til buyout window opens. #Isles
