The contract is going to be the downside. It could potentially effect the Flyers ability to acquire the true top 2 way defenseman they really need in the future. And I emphasize could. A lot is going to depend on what happens in the next few weeks. - MJL
Exactly -- we all know they're not done, IF they get Streit signed. Every single one of us knows they're going to do something else.
Just because I said they shouldn't trade Braydon Coburn or Nicklas Grossmann doesn't mean Paul Holmgren feels that way. Just because I wouldn't trade Sean Couturier or Brayden Schenn doesn't mean Paul Holmgren feels that way.
The one thing I think is underrated about Paul Holmgren is his temper. I don't think he is an angry person, but I've seen enough from him and about him over the years that when he's...unhappy...something's going to happen.
He's not happy that they missed the playoffs. Everybody knows that. He's been sour ever since Nashville matched last summer.

If I'm the Flyers I would trade #11 and Mez to move to #7 and get Edmonton to throw in a 3rd rounder in next years draft. IF they have a specific target that they feel won't drop to 11. - Just5
or maybe we could have just lost the last few games of the season so we didn't have to give up assets.... |

Thing is, with the Flyers' PP having clicked at 20+ percent most recent years and being 3rd in the NHL this past season, I don't think Laviolette and Mullen will be inclined to tinker much with the top unit of Timonen, Voracek, Giroux, Simmonds and Hartnell.
If it were your call to make would you:
a) keep the current umbrella setup but replace Timonen with Streit on the first unit?
b) Keep Timonen at the top of the umbrella, use Streit as the roving other point guy and Voracek, Giroux and either Hartnell/Simmonds lower in the zone?
c) Change the alignment and go with the traditional left and right point men setup with Timonen and Streit at the two points and Voracek, Giroux, Hartnell/Simmonds up front? - bmeltzer
D) mix in Streit with the 2nd unit, which has struggled at times to enhance the back end of the PP |

Well, the Coyotes may not play in PHX next year according to the current press conference. |

MacTavish will really enjoy the laughter that offer would give him.
Drop down 4 picks and gives us your third rounder for a defenseman that is breaking down, is a $4mm hit in a year when the cap is declining and who is owed $5.5mm in salary next season...Yeah, he'll jump at that one. |

I like D. no reason to mess with a first unit that's performing. |

I would go with option A. I think Streit's shot is another weapon for the 1st unit(especially with Simmonds and Hartnell infront) and the second unit would really benefit from Kimmo's composure with the puck.

I dread the over 35 deals as much as the next person but the way some are going on about how old Streit is, you would swear the guy is 45. He turned 35 6 months ago. No reason why he can't still be effective for the next few seasons. |

Early in the thread I posted about the Oilers blog. Blogger was floating trading #7 and amongst the handful of gravel he tossed at a trade was Couturier or Schenn for the #7 + another asset. Larger asset for Couturier.
Would you trade Schenn if it netted you Klefbom and #7 with the idea you could maybe move to 4 or 5 with 7 and 11? You could end up with Klefbom, Monahan(7) and Ristolainen/Pullock(11) or Klefbom and Nichushkin/Barkov?
Obviously I'm just stirring the pot and not endorsing either way. The thought just intrigued me. |

So he's not worth anything? Or even less? With one year left.
Is he worth moving up 4 spots by itself? |

I would not take that deal. But then again I believe Mez (27) has been stuck in a depth role on this team behind Pronger & Kimmo when healthy. I think he is a better Kimmo replacement than Streit based on his numbers when playing with Philly & with Ottawa.
Plus, who are we moving up to get? Ristolian? Nurse? I'd be happier keeping Mez and drafting Pulock at 11th. I like Ristolian better but not THAT much. Now if we wanted to move up to take 5th spot Valeri Nichushkin? Him I'd give up the 11th & Mes for. |

What Jasq said pretty much except that this is the first time there appears to be an NHL off season strategy that could see the Coyotes moved. I think it's this ownership group or it's over. They obviously have a viable option B. |

#7 and Klefbom for Schenn or prob even Couturier is a no brainer in this draft IMO |

If I could trade 11 & Meszaros to get the 7th pick, I'd do it faster than Rick James does a line of blow.
Not only do you get a better pick, you clear $4mm in cap room. |

Edmonton would laugh pretty hard at that...Would you trade a 7th overall pick in this years draft for Schenn? I would be shocked if the Oilers did that as I mentioned earlier it took an 8th overall pick, Jake for Carter. Oilers are looking for immediate help, someone that can get them into the playoffs Schenn isnt that guy.

That is a pretty realistic trade, would be all over that as I'm sure the Flyers would. |
