i've already beaten my drum on this... his trade value is zilch but if he's healthy his value to the flyers is high...... but i am the only sucker who thinks so |

But the price
I'd rather sign a true veteran mentor like Nabokov to a shorter, less-money deal. Then we'd have 2 goalies that won't let up too many soft ones and will put up solid numbers. No superstar (Yet), but enough so that we aren't losing games regularly due to poor goaltending, and maybe we'll even win a few due to good goaltending. - JAKEw1234
Contract aside I think lu is still a big improvement over what we have now. And I think he did a nice job handling loosing/splitting time with Schneider

Probably. If the rights to talk to a UFA can pull a 4th and a low-level prospect, I think a good defenseman with a bad injury history could probably pull a 4th from some team in need of a defenseman like that. I could see Nashville, Columbus, MAYBE Buffalo, MAYBE Dallas, MAYBE Clagary, Colorado, MAYBE Minnesota, New Jersey, or the NY Islanders being willing to give a lower pick in attempts to pick him up cheap, turn around his game, and raise his stocks. It'd be a low-risk, high yield trade from teams that really wouldn't have much to lose in giving a 4th for him. If he's injured then the investment's failed and they've lost what probably ends up only being a low-level prospect anyways. If he has a turn around season then they've acquired a solid dman for only a 4th rounder. Either way, we don't need him here anymore. |

If Gonchar got 2 yrs and $10 million, I believe Streit is getting at least 3 years and somewhere around $16 million. Also, Streit and G have the same agent, so I'm pretty confident a deal has been indirectly/directly discussed before the trade to gage interest on him signing.
I agree with others, I believe Homer inquired about trading for a d-man under contract, saw the asking price and went with the stop gap. Also, Lauridson can start in the AHL, if someone gets injured for a long period of time, I believe he will be in the top 6. I think Mez gets traded for a bag of pucks to free up space. |

If he can stay healthy, Mezz is solid. And if Coburn can pull his head out of his ass, and if Streit, Gus, Grossmann, Schenn and Timo all stay healthy, we actually have a pretty solid defense, with Oliver waiting in the wings just in case... |

well coburn being paired with streit or kimmo instead of big bad bruno should be a start towards that whole head out of ass thing |

Of course he'd be an improvement, but there are much cheaper ways to make improvements. If he signs with a team, you'd think he'd want to be the go-to starter and not get caught in another carousel like in the Couv. If he came here he'd demand big minutes. Any big number of minutes he takes are big minutes that Mason's development is deprived of. On top of that we'd be probably be paying him large sums of money over a long period of time. We have to resign G, Coots, BS, and Read next season, and a Luongo contract would make that considerably harder. I don't think Luongo is our answer. |

sadly - if streit signs I agree. Too bad too cause I really liked Mez when he was still in one piece. |

A blog someone linked on here recently (Forget which one, sorry) actually pointed out that Coburn's advanced stats improve when he's paired with a puck-mover (Kimmo). I think he'd make a solid second pairing with Streit and Gus and Grossmann would make a very solid 3rd pairing. Barring injury, our defense actually looks quite bright on paper. |

If he had shown an ability to stay in one piece I don't think an attempt for Streit would have ever been made. |

I agree on Coburn and Streit being the most logical pair.
This group could be pretty solid, and maybe actually be able to play the way Laviolette really wants to play. |

No such thing as not needing a good defenseman. Last year proved that.

If Meszaros can stay healthy, he'd be a real welcome addition...but I have way too many doubts to count on him staying healthy.
With the cap in flux, they may need to shed his salary. |

Typically I hate "giving" away picks/assets for a players negotiating rights as well. In this case I can understand the move Homer made to be proactive.
The trading for Bryzgalov's rights was a head scratcher considering there didnt appear to be many teams looking for goalies that summer. But in the case of Streit, we know he's going to be fielding multiple offers from various teams once FA begins. It's possible that Streit may mull over his options for a few days or even a week or so. I doubt Homer wants to get caught in a situation where he can't make any other moves because he's waiting on Streit.
I understand that the Weber situation last year vs this scenario are not entirely the same, butin a similar way could end up with Holmgren striking out on Streit and then being forced to pick from the leftovers again.
As others have stated, Homer probably kicked the tires on other deals for younger defensemen and didnt like what he heard regarding the asking prices. They may view Streit as a guy they absolutely need at this point if they do not intend on trading away their youth. And even though he knows he wont get Streit at a discount price by trading for his rights, he can get him locked up, use the buyout(s), and move forward on his terms.
In this case I can see the 4th round pick in '14 being easily worth the price to be proactive and get the guy they want to see what money is left during FA. |

Although Gervais wasn't completely horrible toward the end of the season, let's hope we don't have to play him this season and he can just kick back and collect his checks. |
