I agree - he's a steady D-man - but he's 35. I'm still blown away that Gonachar got 5 a year for 2. - flyersfan51
Unfortunately, that's the market for defensemen with even a little bit of skill these days.
Folks can scream about overpaying all they want, but that's how the market has shaken out for quality veteran d-men.
I guess it would be nice to win the the award for "Most reasonable contracts", but the parade would probably not nearly be as fun.
If you really want to freak out over contracts, wait till you see what Ron Hainsey gets on the open market. |

OK, so Carchidi (I know, I know) suggested the possibility of us moving a vet defenseman to make room for Streit. Should we?
Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Streit
Meszaros-Grossmann
Gustafsson
(Gervais/Lauridsen/Manning/Bourdon if his eggs ever unscramble)
An argument could be made for moving one of Coburn/Mesz/G-mann to clear some money. Alternately, is there a team that might want two of those guys, and could offer one better d-man, or a d-man and forward, in exchange?
I'm guessing the answer all around is no, and we'll end up just trading Mess for a 12th in 2076, but it's an interesting potential domino. |

If by fine you mean missing the playoffs again with "devils" like attandance.... ok. - youarewrong
There's no way that loosing Streit will result in missing the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs it won't be because of Streit. I have so much respect for him and like him a lot but there's no way he's worth what he is asking for and he does have faults. With attendance, we'll see how they do this year since they're supposed to be a better team finally. |

My initial response would get me banned. Assume it had something to do with glad the tedious waiting is over and some excitement is headed our way covers it... - FlyersGrace
I dont get it. Everyone just 2 hours ago was clammoring for the Flyers NOT to trade Schenn and Couturier, and if Striet signs the Flyers dont have to make a major move to get that number 1 d-man just yet. Just a minor tweak should be fine now... come on... quit the knee jerk and think about it. |

Think Homer's hands are tied, would assume demands for d-man are pretty high in the trade market. I'm guessing/hoping 3-4 years 5.5mil per. - flyerfan28
Streit is a stopgap he's getting no more than 2 years. |

agreed. Hamonic is their most reliable defender but Streit wears the C for a reason. He is worth 5 mill/yr, even if its for 3 yrs |

I'm not here to troll. But Streit is anything but steady when it comes to playing D. He'll help out the PP a lot but if you're not on the PP he will not help you. Horrific in his own end. He turned down a 3 years for 4.7 a year I believe so he is going to get over 5 a year for at least 3 years and that's crazy. Good luck either way - Vukota
Thanks for letting us know what he turned down in contract - we'll keep us more realistic in our guesses.
Our pp was actually fairly decent last year and I'd like to see Gus get his shot on it as well so I'm hoping this move won't keep him from it.
One of our biggest issues was the exit of our own zone. We have some decent stay at home types. So if he has any puck moving "get it the hell out of the D zone" and into our forwards hands it will help us.
Of course I'm a big fan of pass and move to get it back versus move and then wonder why the puck got turned over which describes many of our forwards last season... |

I think they should trade someone if they sign Streit. Gustafsson is a top 6 defender or at least deserves a chance to be. Besides, they could get decent value for Coburn, Grossmann, or Mesz (highest value to lowest). |

Given the Flyers penchant for going for it now, plus a very expensive D, AND the fact that they did this BEFORE the draft (and are already negotiating with Brisson), I wonder if they are looking to package Coburn + 11th to move up in the draft. Maybe not top 5, but could be targeting a forward who can make immediate impact.
I think it has to be Coburn with the others injury history. |

They didn't even sign him yet. There's no guarantee they're going to - NYI44
If I had to guess, they will get it done becasue the alternatives are to overpay with young players. These type of D are a hot commodity now. like it or not.
A 4th rounder in 2014 is a fair payment for that opportunity. |

So, in retrospect:
If he gets Matt Carle $$ at 4 years, would you rather have:
Matt Carle ($5.5M, signed through 17/18)
Mark Streit ($5.5M, signed through 16/17, over-35 contract) |

What we really need is to acquire a puck moving dman.. it was painful this year watching this team without Pronger. I'd rathe rpay cash than a couturier or schenn to fix this problem. |

I don't know who would take him. - johndewar
Me neither, but they'd be one smart Mofo. If you haven't noticed when he's not injured, he's normally like Plus 30 some and scores about 30 odd points (even strength). He hits like a truck, has 7 seasons(8 if you count the 11 games this year) NHL experience and is only 27. If I were an opposing GM, I'd target Mes as a big buy-low candidate. |
