It depends what you characterize as legendary. No one is on the same level as Gretzky or Lemieux right now. - PhillySportsGuy
Legendary, to me, is when the player has more than just good stats, it's a player that has a mystique surrounding them, an aura if you will. When you think of Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe, and Richard, they almost transcend the sport. They're larger-than-life figures. No one around right now, save maybe Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, has that going for them. |

that i agree with. crosby just wont hit those levels. i dont see anyone in today's game as that. but are they the only two who can bear that label of legendary?
granted, i think crosby needs another cup, which who knows if he will get it, to really cement his status, but if he stays healthy the numbers he will compile are absurd - stayinthefnnet
Lidstrom may qualify as legendary. Need more time to think about it. |

I think Malkin Crosby and Ovechkin have that ability to be legendary. They need multiple cups.
My question to you is why do Pens fans let Crosby and Malkin off the hook? The teams playoff mis-fortunes have a lot to do with their unwillingness to grind out games and play good two-way hockey. |

True... and now that the NSA releases transcripts of their private phone calls they seem even more normal.
I can't believe Crosby actually cries on the phone to his mother. Sissy. - Flyersgod
He loses credibility because people just don't like him cuz he's a puss. If he was a like able dude he would have a better chance of being in the conversation. |

Lebron and Miguel Cabrera. I agree that one no in hockey dominates like those guys. I believe the sport is a lot harder now for guys to dominate. The best teams are usually built around good forward and defenseman depth. |

i think a lot of that has to do with just playing in a prior time. people have a mindset in sports that things are never going to be as good as they once was. im not saying that everyone should be on an equal footing, but still.
i honestly think crosby and peyton are very comparable cross sport parallels. ridiculous stats, but yet as of now only one title each which is fairly disappointing. |

To be legendary, they're going to need to do something bordering on supernatural. Like have one of them put up 45 points in a Cup run. That's how you get to be legendary, where people tell stories about you and consider themselves lucky to have seen you play. In 20 years, I can't see myself being awed that I got to see Crosby or Ovechkin play. As for Lemieux and Gretzky (and even Messier), it's different.
Maybe Brodeur could be considered legendary. |

They are fans. There isn't any shame in it. We are letting the Flyers off the hook after missing the playoffs. That's what fans do. |

You're not being a Richard. But no he has never made me worried, ever. - Flyersgod
I'm with you. The Flyers own Fleury. I cannot confirm or deny how he plays against other teams but when he plays us, he's overrated. Fleury facing the Flyers, he's only as good as the team in front of him those games. Otherwise we're guaranteed one or two soft games each game we face him. |

I don't think Lebron will be legendary because he's not a likeable person. Miguel Cabrera is still a "who" to me. Maybe it's because I don't follow baseball outside of the NL East, but for all he's done, I still just think "meh" when I hear him. yeah, he's great, but I don't think I'll ever use him name next to Ruth and Aaron. |

they do unjustly escape more criticism than they should. but still, as someone just mentioned, in today's game it is harder for a team built around a superstar to shine. im not using it as an excuse, because its the same set of rules for everyone these days, but in today's playoffs a large amount of clutching and interference goes uncalled. if thats allowed, you can effectively make it so much harder for finesse players to find space to produce. granted, it typically requires a team effort to do so. the only response for that is for other guys on offense to step up and bail them out. not by goonery, but by potting a big goal and making them think twice about spending all their effort clogging up crosby if he can get it off to kunitz for a score. |

and that, right or wrong, does have a lot to do with it. and if thats what people use to hold crosby out of the conversation, then that is their right as a fan. but numbers wise, he is on a different level than anyone else today. |

Cabrera is already a hall of famer and still in his prime. Lebron will be legendary because he will win more titles and be the best player of his era. He is an athletic freak. Michael Jordan was hated by lots of people, but he is legendary. |

i think it will take a long time for people to warm up to the idea of a baseball luminary, just because the sting of steroids and all that. i know they test and whatnot, but how can you be sure? nearly every person we wanted to anoint in the last 20 years has cheated in some form. |

I just think the Pens overall game seems to follow Malkin and more specifically Crosby. If they lose control, the team loses control. I feel if both guys made more of a commitment to defense, the team would be much better. Even if that means sacrificing offense. |

There's a difference between being the best player in the game and being legendary. There was a big stretch where Jagr was the premier player in the game, and he'd win the scoring race easily. To me, he's not as much of a legend as a guy like Steve Yzerman or Joe Sakic. And they're not even close to the Gretzky/Lemieux's. To be a true legend, like I said, you need to basically transcend just the game. |

I know. If it turns out Cabrera is clean, he will go down as one of the greatest hitters of all time. |
