Did you just watch Cobb?

Cobb's non-statistical stories are legendary. Sharpening his spikes to hurt players, beating up a cripple for heckling him.

Oh boy...

Butthead didn't even get to a final in his career let alone win a Stanley Cup.

Wasn't Primeau on the '95 Wings team that got beat by the Devils in the Finals?

That's my point. To me, right now, they ARE a disappointment. There's no reason that a team that stacked hasn't won mutliple cups. They should be like the Wings/Avs of the mid-90s/early-00s. The Cup should have to go through Pittsburgh every year. It doesn't.
- jmatchett383

Crosby is still only 25. He's got one Cup in the bank already. Not to mention he's missed a good chunk of games to injury.

The Penguins aren't nearly as good as the teams you reference defensively. By in large they get in track meets, and you can't win that way in the playoffs majority of the time regardless of talent level.

I think that is going a little too far. I know my hockey history. I've watched the black and white games. And no-one is argueing the importance of Orr or his accomplishments, but Gretzky is the best hockey player of all time. Sure he played on a great Edmonton team, but its not like he sucked when he was traded to LA.

If you ask anyone who the greatest player was, 9 out of 10 will tell you Gretzky...

- youarewrong

It's not going too far. There's still people that will tell you Orr is the greatest ever.

Sorry, but if you say that Orr isn't on the level of Gretzky and Lemieux, then you are wrong. I don't care if you watch black and white games, you obviously didn't understand what you were watching.

Had Orr played in the same era as Gretzky and gotten the same media attention, it'd be less than 9 out of 10 people saying Gretzky is the greatest ever.

Edmonton did it 5 times in 7 years. I think 2 of them had Andy Moog as the goalie.

Different era. Edmonton had what 8 Hall of Famers on their team? Pittsburgh doesn't have anywhere near the talent gap the Oilers had over their competition.

I think it depends on era. Like we've said, some of it's relative to when you grew up. People from the 60s/70s will say it's Howe and Richard. People from the 80s will say Orr. People from the 90s/00s will say Gretzky and Lemieux.

There's an interesting point. It seems that every era has 2 guys. Except for the 70s. Orr stands alone in the 70s. There were guys like Esposito, LaFleur, Dionne, etc. But Orr is the 70s guy. Just find that odd.

Cobb was asked how he'd do against "today's" pitchers when he was in his late sixties or early seventies. He said, "Oh, I'd probably hit around .270". The reporter said, "So you think the pitchers today are that much better than when you played?" and Cobb said, " No, you jackass....I'm 70 years old!"

Penguins have thier window. The won 1 and lost 1. Now with Corsby, Malkin, and Letang contracts they wont be able to ice a complete team. Soon there will be a time when the Penguins go from great team, to moderate team, to cant get out of those contracts team...

I would say about 3 years before those contracts REALLY start to kill the team.

True. Still, every year they're picked to win it come playoff time, and every year, they don't.

Era is part of it, but Gretzky played in the first era where hockey really got a lot of attention in the US, and he was the face of hockey at the time.

When Orr played, there wasn't a huge national TV deal in the US, you got one game a week, on NBC.

Very possible. Although if the rumor of the cap going to 80m in the near future is true, they will be able to surround their stars with decent talent.

Edmonton also had a stellar money goalie. Grat Fuhr's stats were not the best, but that guy rarely allowed a goal when his team managed to get the lead.

I actually read the book Al Stump wrote after Cobb's death that the movie "Cobb" was based on. He was an interesting guy and an awful human being.

You are wrong. You can era this, media attention that, but you are still wrong. You seem to think I am dismissing Orr and as a result you are trying to insult me. Maybe it is you who are mistaken.

Didn't Moog win at least 2 of them? Actually I think Ranford won in 1990.

Yup. Fuhr's regular season stats weren't great, but the guy came to play in big games. Money goalie. The perfect goalie for that team.
