And your flaw is that you think anyone who quotes an "advanced stat" (which is a misnomer), that it's the only angle they're looking at. - bradleyc4
No, not anyone. Just those who use advanced stats as the main source of their player evaluations. |

Not true at all. Another myth created by Advanced stats. Some players are role players. And have a certain skill set that makes them effective. If what you're saying is true, then players like Rinaldo would have no place in the NHL. When clearly they do. Just shut off the TV and just look at the advanced stats. Don't even watch the game and see what happens. That's part of the culture that advanced stats has created. - MJL
No, this is just your take on new stats. Not actuality.
And guys like Rinaldo shouldn't have a place in the NHL. |

There's a time and place for them, like I mentioned in my previous comment to you. I'm saying that if "hits" is one of your best traits, you're not a very good NHL player. - bradleyc4
I think the statistic 'hits' is laughable, but I don't think having a lot of hits is necessarily a bad thing. |

But for some reason they do, while guys like Simon Gagne and Damien Brunner still await a team to call their names. |

Your posts on this subject are making my case. Especially your last sentence here.
Some Advanced stats are very useful. Looking at Corsi for a player like Rinaldo, is a waste of time. So flawed. |

Luke Schenn hits too much and doesn't score enough, we should waive him. |

The problem with RTS stats is that it is not uniform from building to building. And it is subjective. But hitting is a big part of the game, and is very effective. |

If he was doing an even better job of possessing the puck, clearing the zone or starting breakouts, he wouldn't have to hit as much. |

This statement is obviously inaccurate. Hits are a well-defined stat kept league-wide, and having to hit often is a clear indication that a player is terrible. |

Because a defenseman's primary job is to possess the puck, and not to take the puck away from an opponent, correct? You do realize that hitting is a method of ending opposition's possession of the puck, right? |

Hitting can be good or bad, I think. There are some players who focus on it and put themselves and, consequently, their teams in bad positions (defensively or otherwise). But on the other hand, some players have undeniably benefited from having a mean checking game, at both the upper and lower end of the talent spectrum. |

I can make a case for Rinaldo's effectiveness. I can make a case on how his hitting has a cumalative effect throughout the game. And helps the team, and has an effect on the productiveness of following shifts for other players on the team. Hockey has been around a lot longer then advanced stats have been. I wonder how anyone has come to the correct analysis of players before the creation of behindthenet. Like I said, just shut off the TV, and don't watch then game. Because I don't see how anyone can come to the conclusion that a player like Rinaldo has no place in the NHL, if they're watching the game. |

This is really all that SHOULD need to be said. I don't care about his numbers, I watch the games and realize that he has a positive effect on the team. |

I don't know. I'm sympathetic to what you are saying, but this is kind of like complaining that Miley Cyrus doesn't acknowledge Mozart in her work.
Rinaldo is given a role as an energy guy and he plays that role. If he was playing in different situations, I'd probably demand more from him and I think it's a bit high handed to simply dismiss this guy and what he brings. |

You're right. A new line of thinking has no place in a game as old as the NHL.
I guess that's why most teams have an analytics team. Because there's no place for it. It's not as old as the NHL. No team has had success using them as a tool to help better understand the game and their roster. |

Luke Schenn should be hitting players. That's part of his job. My point was that as he becomes a better all-around defenseman, he won't have to hit as much. |

But his job is to be a physical shutdown defnseman, not an offensive-minded defenseman like Carle. Part of his job is to hit often. |
