franson is gone next year - Sammich
Yup.
He'll score nearly 40 points and ask for $25 mil/5 years.
Then we trade him. |

I don't think Franson works much better with Rielly than Gardiner. I liked him best sheltered on the third pairing with Fraser (plus PP time).
The truth is that he's a mediocre defender who scores points. He'll get paid based on offensive production, which sucks.
If he weren't so valuable to us as a rightie, he'd be the best candidate for a trade. His return would be best and we could try to fill his spot with an actual defender. - Leeman4Gilmour
Meh, Franson hasn't looked as good this year! but he's either playing with Rielly who has played good but is still a rookie or he's playing with Gardiner who is never at his position |

Is it not concerning to any Leafs fans that Nonis and other management don't see the value in analytical work?
I mean lots of other NHL teams are using it...shot attempts, quality of competetion, zone starts...
You may agree/disagree with these concepts but wouldn't you want your NHL team not falling behind others NHL teams? Better to do the work and reach a conclusion, rather than do nothing. - Talkshowhost
Maybe they have their own analytical approach. Or maybe they feel they've assembled a scouting group that can provide better insight than sifting through piles of boxscores. |

Well if you think there is something to be gained by having an analytical department, which many NHL teams do apprently. They likely value the results they are finding.
I just find it odd they had it in the budget, and didn't use it, or develop their own?
Analytics in hockey aren't going away, they will keep growing. Might as well be in the know... |

Analytics can be deceiving, even we as fans know it.
Put someone on the ice with Niklas Lidstrom, and their stats would have been inflated.
Put someone on Crosbys wing, and their stats are inflated.
Have someone change on the fly, but never actually join the rush as they are behind the play. Their team scores on the rush. They are now +1. Their stats are inflated.
There are too many invariables in hockey that current normal and advanced stats do not show |

I'm not sure why Gunnarsson gets so much hate around here. There's a guy who just goes to work and quietly does his job.
He plays a steady, efficient style of game. He's doing it playing in over his head, too. - Leeman4Gilmour
This. Well, except the last part; I don't think he's over his head at all: he's been in the top pairing for over 3 seasons now, I think he knows exactly what he's doing and what's expected of him.
And look at how much better Phaneuf is playing with a healthy Gunnarsson at his side. I think Gunnarsson's a steal and one of the most underrated defensemen in the league.

Totally. The whole Corsi thing is completely dependent on a terrible assumption: that shot attempts equates possession. Nonis has it right and as soon as they have a better method of actually tracking possession time accurately, all this is just spank material for the Excel sluts to fap all over. |
