Why? They get no points if there is no tie breaker. Both sides can shake hands and say good night. If I go out with a friend and I buy the first round, then after that first round he buys the next. Then we go home, we split even. For both sides, it has to be forth while. A game ending in a tie really isn't worth while. - Schenn2shine
so you like having a game of horse decide the outcome
makes sense if you need to feel better about yourself |

The NHL has made it the sport like it or not. Just like the nfl makes kickers doing field goals and extra points, part of the sport. - Just5
makes no sense you get 3 points instead of 6 for a field goal |

Kicking field goals and extra points has always been a part of football...in fact, in the early days of football there was far more emphasis on the kicking game.
And now, thankfully, the NHL seems t be realizing that deciding the outcome of a game by not playing the game is moronic.
As soon as the NFL decides game with the kickers lining up and kicking field goals until one misses, you can use that argument. |

we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this.
hockey is (frank)ing awesome game ... I just hate seeing such a great game decided by a gimmicky skills competition. It just cheapens it. We may as well have each team send out a goon to center ice, and let them fight it out for the extra point.

that's basically all it does ... it saves energy, and I suppose it entertains (some) fans. - FlyerGuy
Good. I paid the ticket and I want a result. I hate watching a football where both teams work their butts off and a field goal wins it with four seconds left because one side gain feild goal rage. That's me though. |

Of course it does. You add time to the clock, you put in more energy. I'm sure people who work doing hard labour can tell you that. - Schenn2shine
I dunno....
I mean- as a hockey player- I've played continuous OT games in playoffs. Nothing ridiculous, but 15 minutes comes to mind, during one specific game.
Now, I know it's the playoffs and there's been some adrenaline pumping, but my point is simply adding 5 more mins of OT on is basically adding a handful of sand to a beach.
Going back to that game- before my team won at around the 15 minute mark, I can say that I'd feel exactly the same playing to that 15 minute mark than if someone scored and the game ended 10 minutes in. Do you know what I mean? |

that would be more entertaining than the shoot out and save energy |

You don't like boxing or UFC? Who cares as long as one side wins. It's all about winning. |

to you guys who like the shoot out ... would you want it during the playoffs?? Can you imagine a SC champion being decided by it?
if that seems wrong, why is it okay during the regular season? |

i guess the people that don't like field goals don't like 2 pointers in basketball or anything less than grand slams in baseball |

How would you feel if he NHL took out the shootout, they allowed ties and a team, your team, manages to go five ties in a row? Would that not bore you in some way? I think the NHL would become a joke to Baseball, Football and Basketball. |

I've seen a LOT of boxing matches end in a draw. And they were freaking awesome. Two warriors going at it, until they had nothing left to give. |

The NHL did that for nearly 100 years, and it did pretty well during that time. It expanded 500% in size during that time frame. |

While it would be boring....and annoying....it's just part of the game at that point.
That being said, we all know the NHL's had ties for plenty of years. I'd doubt that an anomaly like that has ever happened, nor does it have a good chance of doing so.
Remember, also, that 4v4 opens up a whole hell of a lot of chances. Let's not assume a tie all the time. You saw the OT tonight. Give Coburn a few more chances, and MAYBE he buries one 8 minutes in
I'm not trying to jump down your throat here- I hope I don't come off like that |

So...on one hand we want the Flyers to change by not trading and signing goons but somehow we want the NHL to stay the same. It's a different game and I choose to accept that, just like I choose to accept that the Flyers want a fighter in their line up year after year. |

Shootout are just a part of the game at this point. I enjoy the shootout during world junior games. Carry Price and Jonathan Toews were apart of a fun one to watch just prior to coming to the NHL. |

Boxing matches are like playoffs games. Boxers go months before fighting again. A boxer is unlikely to box again the next night or two night away...or even three nights away...and they're risking serious body harm with every blow.
My bad for even bringing up boxing...I guess.... |

They are a part of the game....I just want to get rid of them!
What it boils down to me is 2 points- I don't really think adding 5 more minutes of extra 4v4 and including the tie again will take much more of a physical toll on the players, and I want the game to be decided by playing the game itself. The game we watched for 60+ minutes.
I keep going back to the analogy of deciding who wins a war by skeet shooting. It's a little silly....
Shootouts in my opinion just taint the outcome of the game. Ties are ties, but at least hockey was played throughout. |

Apples and oranges.
Carrying or not carrying a goon is a trend, that ebbs and flows over time.
Changing the rules of the game, so that teams get a "win" because they did better in a gimmick after a hard fought hockey game ended in a tie, is a fundamental difference in the sport itself.
My main issue is, it decides a "winner" by not playing the actual game. A shootout isn't a hockey game.
I'll put it another way, Without Chris Pronger it's unlikely the Flyers make their SCF run in 2010. Without Zdeno Chara, it's unlikely the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011. It's very possible that those two were their team's most valuable players in those seasons.
But in a shootout, they're rendered almost useless. Pronger didn't appear in a shootout for the Flyers during the 2009-10 season. In 2010-11, Chara took part in one shootout. |

If they did that, it's still a tie football game. kicking field goals without the team earning field position is not football in any sense of the word. |
