Usually you get a sense of who the whiners are. I just never really got that from Stevie Y. Guys like Crosby, Kesler, Burrows etc get those reputations because you can see it on the ice. Constantly chirping and whining.

From the Chicago Tribune, January 7, 1996:

Yzerman Talks Self Right Out Of Game

DETROIT — Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman learned the hard way last week that words sometimes speak louder than actions.

Yzerman was tossed from Wednesday night's game here against Dallas, not for anything he did, but for what he said to referee Dan Marouelli.

Yzerman complained to Marouelli when no penalty was called after he was tripped up by the Stars' Dave Gagner. One thing led to another until Marouelli told him, "If you don't shut up, you're going to get a penalty right now."

The last straw apparently came after Marouelli finally sent the Detroit center to the penalty box and told him, "Get in the penalty box or you'll get more."

Yzerman apparently thought he was being the soul of logic when he pointed out, "I can't, the period's over."

The referee didn't see it that way and harsher language ensued, leading to Yzerman's ejection.

"He just lost it," said Yzerman, "and I get thrown out because of it. If he can't keep his composure, he shouldn't be out there refereeing."

Say it ain't so Stew!!! No wonder you looked at me funny when I wore my Yzerman sweater to the morning skates at Iorio.......Disappointed to hear that about him. He is revered in Motown for his leadership. Too bad that didn't extend to his interaction with the 3rd team.

A lot of the "warrior" type players do the same, Toews/M.Richards do plenty of "whining" to officials. Not saying that Kesler/Burrows don't either, but it's not just exclusively the guys with those reps.
