Looks like the Canes got a Dman prospect in the deal as well.

TOR prospect going to CAR with J-M Liles for Gleason is defenceman Dennis Robertson, 6th round pick in 2011 draft. |

Change of scenery trade so both players might play better...Doubt it more of a shake up trade for the Canes ,but JR is really after a 3rd line center to make much of a difference Imo however more body's will have to go starting with a goalie. |

Liles costs less money in the next couple years and has a slightly lower cap hit. Both teams arr trading the same contract length on d men that find themselves too far down the depth chart. Both teams trade to take a chance on adressing an area of need. I liked liles. Good trade |

Matt Karash: Thoughts on Tim Gleason for John-Michael Liles trade - CarolinaMatt63
Pretty much the exact same scenario existed for the Leafs in that Liles provided a redundant skill-set and was beat out in camp by a younger, better player. The Leafs tried to play him to showcase him but he played so awful that this was the best we could do. He's not an NHL defenseman any longer, IMO. Hopefully Gleason is. |

This is good because you guys were looking for a puck moving defender and we needed a stay home defender. Contracts were similar so it worked out. Liles will get alot of playing time now and i felt really bad seeing him sent down as he is a good player. He did not deserve that as he is way better than ranger and fraser.. he will be treated appropriately on a team like carolina |

Exactly. I do not think that there is a guarantee that either player works out, but both teams got rid of someone who could not crack the top 6 anyway and added a player who at least possesses a different skill set that each team needs. |

I think Liles will work out in Carolina. He was in a bad situation in Toronto with just too much of the same skill set ahead of him.
Liles still has the tools/skills to be a decent puck moving NHL dman.
I think if Gleason can stay healthy, he might be better suited for a Carlyle type system......
Good trade for both teams with really nothing to lose. |

Lets be honest here, if either of them even become decent #6 d-men for their new teams, it will be a pleasant surprise. - Nucker101
I think Liles should have been a top 6 guy all year. Carlyle was stupid for not letting him play. |

I personally liked Liles, I guess that Grads and Rielly pushed him out. He'll do well in Carolina, a decent puck mover with experience. Good trade for both teams IMO. |

Meh, I could see him maybe being useful on the PP, but at 5-on-5 he's gonna need easy minutes to be useful. |

This trade is not a real surprise. I hate to see Gleason go. He has been a key part of the Canes, but it was time. I'll be interested to see what Liles can do to help the power play. From what I have heard Liles seems to be a respected part of the locker room and will not have a hard time fitting in. It will be interesting to see who the healthy scratches will be on defense when Harrison returns.
I don't think Rutherford is done tweeking the lineup and expect more moves in the next couple of weeks. |
