That people think Ryan Miller had to carry that 2010 team. When in reality that wasn't the case. The goalie of that tournament was Luongo.

See, this is how I know you either didnt watch the games, or have forgotten what happened.

Louongo was not overly great. Our goaltending was overmatched most games, luckily for us the rest of our team was able to outplay the rest of the opposition.

Luongo saved Canada's chances at gold after Brodeur just gave away the first game to the US. Plus Luongo also played well against a surprising Slovakian team in the semi's.

He didnt steal any games by any means. He stopped the shots that should be stopped by an NHL netminder...thats really it.

Luongo was praised for bringing stability, not greatness, to the Canadian goal.

He won a gold medal. He [layed well when it counted vs. the Slovaks and Americans.

People wanna talk and hype up the play of Ryan Miller in 2010. He had one great game vs Canada in the qualifying rounds. That game he made 42 saves. In the 2 before that he made a total, TOTAL, over two games, he made 24.

In the medal round he made 19 saves against Switerland and made 18 saves in 2 periods against Finland. The USA dominated that game that Tim Thomas played the 3rd period. Ryan Miller had 1 great game.

Team USA has Quick as the clear cut starter. Miller only recently moved up to the #2 spot ahead of Howard, who almost moved out of the top 3.
- bluecoconuts

i think that depends on who you talk to.

I think Quick WAS the clear cut starter, though now that all depends on how well he returns from injury...and to boot Miller(who has been pretty consistent all season on the worst team in NHL) is playing his best hockey in a long, long time.

You obviously weren't among the voters who gave him the MVP of the tournament.

Zach Parise was my vote. And remember he was a Devil at the time. So it's not like I was biased.

The easiest thing for the voters to do would have been to give the MVP to Luongo if he played better, given the fact that Canada won the gold and the games were in Vancouver. Miller was too good to ignore for MVP.

They first game against Canada they scored 5 goals. In the semifinal they beat Finland 6-1. Don't tell me Ryan Miller got them to a gold medal game. He had tons of help. Plus the only reason the game got to OT was because Zach Parise scored one of the biggest goals in US hockey history. Ryan Miller blew that game and a gold medal because he couldn't make a routine save.

Ryan Miller only played 2 games in which he had to make 30 saves or more. He lost one of them and gave up 3 goals in both. He only played 2 periods vs. Finland. Only mad 10 save against Norway and made a total of 33 saves vs Switzerland in 2 games vs them. If it's stupid, than please educate me.

He won the MVP based on one 40 saver performance vs Canada in the qualifying rounds.

My guess is Backes or Callahan for captain.
- BetterCallSaul

Its definitely going to be Backes Callahan and Brown, They named those three first. I believe Backes was first followed by Brown and then Callahan. So that is your captain and two assistants.

I guess you don't remember Demitra's chance near the end of that game. Yes, Demitra who tore up that tournament.

Miller was incredible. Luongo was very good. Really poopty that he gets labelled as the goalie lucky enough to play for Canada and that any goalie would have won with that team.

The US model isn't without its flaws though. Namely, they rarely bring in a guy that can put a team on its back when things aren't going well. They're deep, but only effective when firing on all cylinders. If one part is even a little defective, they tend to fall apart.

It's what happened the other day against Canada, and in 2012 in Alberta.

- buffalofan19

That's a totally reasonable point in terms of how they choose the teams. The model also is supposed to include developing better all-around skill level from the developmental levels on up...if you believe what the guys said who called the US-Canada game on NHL network. If that part is true...and I don't know if it is but they both seemed well informed....then I think that part of the model fits what you are looking for. They are looking to develop more players who can carry a team...while also maintaining the two-way framework.

I feel like the thing any USA fan could ask is whether the player development and selection give you the best chance to be competitive against Canada even when the talent differential is great between the two countries. To me the answer is yes. It won't always be perfect, but I don't know that there's a better approach than blending skill development with an emphasis on character and two-way play.

I'm not sure how far back you go as far as watching hockey goes but the 1998 US Olympic debacle, featuring reported off-ice issues/behavior by the US team is still something I think about when it comes to putting together a team. That team was pretty talented but completely embarrassed itself by several accounts.

So I guess my question is, how would you approach the development and/or selection process differently to make it better?
