Needlenose Ned? Ned The Head?

Yeah, very apt.

Mason played well, which was nice to see after a couple rough outings. The more hardcore stats guys hate him, but he hasn't been as bad as the raw numbers indicate. That said, he's seen a dip in performance and also had some bad luck.

I didn't read back (I was at the game) and I'm sure someone mentioned it, but how, exactly was that whole play not the definition of a penalty shot?

Raffl was in the clear, and had a scoring opportunity going in on net and Legwand's penalty encumbered him.

Someone please explain.

penalty shot is only awarded when the player is in possession of the puck in the offensive side of center ice and clear lane to the net, with the defender illegally taking away a scoring chance from behind. iirc, the puck popped off the glass support and raffl swiped at it. he wasn't in possession all alone going to the net.

he's been good enough for them to win most nights. having zero margin for error 25 games into the season is going to wear you down. the failed clears, bad turnovers, and lack of dictating play is really what's at work. the goalie isn't an issue.

That's definitely part of it. He'll benefit from the break for the Olympics. I hope they can get him some defensive help. How they're not dressing Gustafsson is beyond me.

not surprising the name carter is involved in a wide open net puck going into the only place inside of 24 sq ft that it could have been stopped. that puck lays flat and it's a goal. jfc.

They didn't even use Voracek...they let Simmonds & Raffl shoot before him.
- Jsaquella

Or Schenn. Or anyone not named Coburn or Timonen, really.

The possession numbers with & with out Gus are really damning.

A chart comparing Steve Mason's save % during his rookie season in Columbus & this season.

See how similar they are? Obviously he's never going to be anything.

Of course only a (frank)ing moron would just look at stats without looking at the actual play.

While Mason's play has dipped, and it has dipped, he's also playing behind a team whose defensive play has progressively gotten worse.

Also, one has to factor in his age now and his maturity level, as well as his willingness to work on his game and overall coachability. That stuff was an issue in Columbus. Every goalie, from Martin Brodeur to Tommy Soderstrom has bad stretches. The Brodeurs bounce back. The Soderstroms don't.

The "fancy stats". Stuff like Corsi, Fenwick, etc. The Flyers control the puck more when Gustafsson is in the lineup.

pure stats will never tell the tale of a goalie. you need to watch the game. its the only way to judge the performance. there have been games where due to a heavily defensive team in front of him, all 25 shots a guy will face are pretty much perimeter harmless ones, and rebounds are quickly swept away by cautiously placed defenders. an odd goal or two gets in, and his team either wins or loses a one goal game. few games like that an a guy can easily rack up a glistening save percentage. then you will have a guy who faces 25 shots, comprised of uncontested slot rips, odd man rushes, and rebounds are potted by guys left unattended due to egregious lack of backchecking.

guy saves them more often than not, but still gives up 4 goals. statistics portray an awful game, when in reality he performed more admirably than guy 1.
