Toronto's in LTIR... so no 'decrease', as you put it. They only have 900k-ish of usable space. Flyers can only retain up to 50% of Vinny's. Hard for the math to add up, unless they're willing to give you another player in addition to Gardiner, which seems like a stretch, especially with Liles already gone, and them fighting for a PO spot. Directly trading with a team you'll probably be head-to-head in the wild card race also doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Edit: Bolland's about to come off LTIR, too. - Tomahawk
I birdy just tweeted that your dead wrong about Vinny's contract not pro-rating because Toronto is in LTIR.
It has to do with how a team's cap space is calculated due to LTIR space not being bankable, and not with how a players cap charge, which is different from a players cap hit, is calculated for a team acquiring a player in season. A players cap charge to a team acquiring the player is the same whether a team is in LTIR or not. What changes is how much cap space a team has when using LTIR. The amount of AAV a team can take on grows when not in LTIR because of being able to bank cap space. LTIR cap space is use it or lose it on a daily basis, which is why the amount of AAV a team can acquire stays the same day after day, because LTIR Cap space is not bankable.

Of course Vinny's cap-hit gets pro-rated. If he gets traded, it's not as if the accepting team has to pay him for the time he spent in a Flyers sweater all over again.
But, as your birdie said above, LTIR is accounted differently. The amount can't get saved for later use, it is what it is. Toronto can only replace an AAV of $970k today... Vinny makes AAV $4.5M. His pro-rated salary may decrease with each of day of the season that goes by, but his AAV will never change (unless they retain some of it).

Your back tracking a bit there. I never said anything about a teams bankable space. Toronto has 970 some K in LTIR. Between that, what Philly is taking back, and Vinny's pro-rated hit, it would not be difficult to make vinny fit.

Your scenario requires Toronto to bend over backwards to trade for Vinny, and the Flyers to bend over backwards to trade him away. That's the takeaway from all this.

I wonder what is a more common last name in the Tri-State area. Smith, or Patel.

Toronto would be happy to bend over to take Vinny.
