Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 1/21/14 vs. Carolina - bmeltzer
Olesky on waivers from WSH... right-shot, mature, steady, tough, mobile, league-minimum contract. Not the most flashy or purely skilled player out there, but they desperately need another right-shot in the group, and unlike Hal Gill, they might actually play him.
At worst, if he's not up to snuff, they just re-waive him or he joins the Phantoms. |

Yeah, Olesky can't be much worse than what they have currently and he's a righty shot. He's also good at getting under opposing players' skin. Seems like everytime he plays the Flyers he's in a fight or getting into trouble |

Do the Flyers have a contract slot available for a move like this?

Numbers crunch more than anything. Orlov is playing more and Olesky is the odd man out. He's not great, but he can probably be as good as guys like Grossmann, Schenn & Gill. |

Because he wasn't smart enough to demand a trade like many of the Caps.

A loss tonight is inexcusable, also the defense needs to protect Mason more. What happened to the defense 1st approach? Now we are trying to out gun and out skate opposing teams...... |

The defense is there in front of the goalies for the most part. From what I see they all collapse into slot area in front of the goalie and to a good job marking people. The problem is due to the lack of foot speed on the team, teams can hem them in their own end for long stretches with cycles, and will get multiple shot attempts before the flyers retrieve the puck. |

There were two goals yesterday that were the direct result of blown coverages by Grossmann, that had nothing to do with speed. He made bad reads and failed to do his job well. |

I remember one on him and then the tying goal I think it was coburn that didn't get to his man quick enough on the pk.
Islanders took advantage of a slow flyers team. One that gets frustrated when you get on the puck carrier hard and quick |

That has more to do with puck moving ability and decision making than foot speed. The Flyers defense panics when they face a good steady forecheck, because they're not especially good at moving the puck, either by passing or skating it out themselves.
Foot speed is an issue-as evidenced from the multiple breakaways where the Isles simply blew past the defense, but it didn't cost them goals. But they also have issues with decision making and "hockey sense" matters, like making proper reads and maintaining discipline in their coverage and overall play.
On the 1st goal, Grossmann failed to pick up Tavares. On the 2nd, he and Brayden Schenn chased the puck and left a man open at the side of the net. On the third, Coburn was late reacting and didn't pick up Okposo in time.

when is the last time we had a fully competent defense corps that was good under pressure, could skate the puck out and move it out quickly? |

that's what i was thinking as well, but running 4 dmen into the ground without a third pair hurt them when i counted most, imo, so to me it's not a fully competent d unit. i'm talking 6 guys. ever? |
