Paul Stewart: Badgers and Buffoons - Paul Stewart
And he is the same way on MSNBC Sports.... he has players he likes and praises them no matter what and those he doesn't like he calls them names and mocks them endlessly. he is a horrible analyst for hockey. |

I enjoyed the read, but you didn't really answer the make-up call part of the question. I was really interested in knowing if make-up calls were actually a tactic used by referees to to make a game more "fair" or less hostile. |

Stewy - what would be wrong within the two referee system of conferring with the other official if one official has doubts or if the second official has a strong opinion on a call? Just like in football when they 'pick up the flag' after a conference.
IMHO, this would work but calls should only be changed when the second official has a definite opinion on the call.
Great example of when this would be used was the sabres-bruins game this year when a Sabre got called for slashing because Chara's stick ended up broken, but he actually broke it slashing a Sab. From wher eit happened the 2nd official had a good lookm at it, and a matter of fact made one of those infamous 'makke up' calls soon afteR. |

So how about answering the question if refs can take a csll back or use make up calls. More to the point now there are 2 refs why do they not collaborate on a call. Not once have I ever seen a delayed penslity called but taken back. It can be done. In football the refs can throw a flag and say "there was no infraction on the play". Even linesman can change thier call when they are wrong and make a cfnter ice face off. But not once have I seen a ref who raised their hand change thier decision. |

I'm still waiting for someone to write a flattering remark about Milbury. Waiting…Still waiting. |

Its a little tougher in the NHL. What if the team that was going on the PP scored a 6v5 goal when they pulled the goalie? Does that goal come off the board? |

See yesterday's blog... I never believed in makeup calls (didn't like them even when I was a player). The objective is make the right call. Makeup calls run counter to that goal. If you miss a call, own up to it and then get the next set of calls right.
I will be doing an upcoming blog specifically about my dislike of makeup calls.

Well, his suits appear to be clean when he broadcasts. Does that count as flattering? |

Just the truth as I see it. I also gave him credit where I think it was due and noted that not all of our interactions have been confrontational ones. |

I'm wondering if there is some former NHL player, exec. or official who if given a forum like this may write the same kind piece about "Stewie"?
a bit much if you ask me.

I'm sure there are plenty of jerks in the league. Not sure if your blog space is the where they all need to be outed. |

Not the purpose to out someone. I'm talking about acceptability between coaches and officials, and why some achieve it and some don't. Bob Johnson and other I mentioned (Burns, Crisp, etc) had it. Mike is an example of someone who didn't. The blog explains why on both sides. |

Oh man, I thought us Isles fans had rid ourselves of Mike Milbury. Is it possible that the org as a whole can't shake the bad blood he created with the officiating community? And, do things like low payroll, circus atmosphere, perception of poorly run franchise, bad attendance, crazy owner exasperate that perception of Isles (or other franchises) among officiating crews? either overtly or subliminally? Are franchise's and teams like the Isles actually fighting an uphill battle with calls on ice or is that just the perception of a fan base that is used to being downtrodden? |

I remember the 1991 Wales Conference Finals, when Mike Milbury called Bob Johnson a "professor of goonism" after the Ulf Samuelsson vs Cam Neely hit.
Paul, what was the most exciting game you were ever a part of as an official? I'm sure there were many excellent contests, but is there 1 that really sticks out far and away above the others? |

This blog is must-read stuff for me, and this particular entry is a great example why. Can't stand to listen to Milbury bloviate on and on on NBCS. Can't fathom how he got a talker job in the first place. At least HNIC was smart enough to see the light. Somehow NBCS keeps running him out in front of the camera with a microphone.
This blog is exactly what I love to read about hockey- "inside" the game, from an officiating standpoint from a former NHL player. I don't know of anywhere else I can read such unique content. Stewy is kind enough to share some stories from his illustrious career, and he "calls it like he sees it." Totally fine if someone doesn't care to hear opinions, anecdotes, and great hockey stories from someone who has "been there," "done that," "heard that," "said that." By now you should know exactly what you may get when you click on Stewy's blog. If ya don't like it, don't click on it. Personally, I find myself constantly looking forward to the next entry. And the book? Really, really can't wait for that! |

I like his blogs too. They are interesting. Does not mean I have to like everything I read, just because he worked in the NHL.
I thought this one went beyond an insider's piece to one wanting to let the world know what a jerk and buffoon Mike Milbury is.
How would Paul react if on some blog a former NHL player wrote a piece about what buffoon Paul Stewart is? I'd be pissed if I were him. It's one thing to compare different personalities within the game and how some were more pleasant than others but this got personal. |

That is for better men then me to figure out, but the same thing can be said in football. How do the refs know a team isnt going ot score when they call play dead in football. Maybe the answer to the solution is to stop play at the time of an infraction. |

I agree with this.
I hate Milbury as much as anyone, but to blog at such length about how much of a jerk he is, and recount specific instances of him being a buffoon, seems really over the top to me. |

Yeah, first time I was dissappointed with one of your blogs...normally awesome stuff.
I'm pretty certain everyone who has been around, or heard Milbury voice an opinion, realizes he's not the most rational or thoughtful person.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
I'll chalk this up and look forward to the next. |

After I read the blog I was trying to figure out why the bashing was taking place now, did I miss something recently dealing with Milbury. I can't stand the guy either but to start a blog with a question concerning make-up calls leading into this. What did we miss? |

He gave his opinion, that's what blogs are about. And he didn't hide behind a phony online ID or make the comments behind Milbury's back. He manned up with his opinion and signed his name to it.
I guess in today's world of political correctness that offends some people. |
