Love this picture. Pang would have zero chance in the NHL today.

I think if women have the ability to play the game at a high level then they should be given the opportunity to play at the highest level they can, be it the NHL or whatever. That being said though, the disparity between levels of strength between male and female hockey players is too great. Since the NHL is a contact league we would see way too many injuries happening to female players, especially concussions.

It doesn't matter where there reproductive organs are. If they're good enough, let them play! Having said that, is there any of them that can handle playing at such elite level? Probably not....

My gf is a feminist and always pushing for equality in sport. She's always concerned with how much tv and time women's sports get compared to the men. I try to explain to her that it comes down to the almighty dollar. Men are just built to be "higher, faster, stronger" by genetics. I feel people in general like to watch the highest, fastest, strongest, and hence more attention is put to that by the tv networks. It doesn't mean women are inferior people or athletes. They just aren't built to compete with men. That's why a woman PROBABLY wont play in the NHL.
Not only that, but I think it would mess with the mens' heads..."can I hit this lady? should I charge the net like usual? It would change the dynamic. Not to mention where would she change pre and post game? She would be totally isolated from the team atmosphere.

i just read a fantastic book, "the sports gene" by david epstein of sports illustrated. it basically addresses the genetics of elite athletes and how incredibly diificult it would be to engineer an athlete. the chapter that deals with sex comes right out and says that men and women are segregated for athletic purposes because the playing field is not level. this is especially true as the level of competition goes up. could you have a woman goalie in a beer league?- absolutely. however as the level of competition goes up, even the best women will be surpassed by the average and above average men. then there are the absolute number of participants- how many women goalies are there to choose from. manon rheaume can be used as an argument for both sides- she did play professional sports, but she did not play in the regular season in the nhl. the book addresses many things like running times, physical strength, the ability to throw a ball (i cant find a link, but the fastest a woman has thrown a softball is around 67 mph, compare that to aroldis chapman hitting 105mph for the reds). i guess the answer is, its not impossible, but its pretty unlikely.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Danica Patrick from Nascar yet? The only sport where I woman has cracked a regular shift playing and the car does most of the work.

As for a woman goalie it's possible but highly unlikely. Chara taking a one timer into her five hole and ...... where's the puck?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that thought it. Am I right?

Nascar driving has some physicality to it, but it's mostly mental...and plenty of Women are almost as smart as men.

if any player gave so much as a dirty look to a female goaltender, the refs would throw everything including the kitchen sink at them

Of course their depth perception sucks....which probably lends itself to the goaltending aspect. How can a woman reach out and grab a 95 mph slapshot if she can't judge proper parallel parking space...

They should just do away with mens/womens events in the Olympics, just have an event that anyone can enter if they are good enough, man or woman. That way the world's best athlete in each event wins, period, not the best man and the best woman, the best ATHLETES PERIOD!!

True story...

I remember playing against a girl in senior high school and she was a good player. This was also a full contact league.

Throughout the game you could see that guys were avoiding her and not playing her as hard as they should/would any other player and she was DEFINITELY using that to her advantage as she had no problem being chippy. At one point later in game she came down the wing with her head down and (being a D-man and doing my job) I destroyed her (like I would anyone else if given the opportunity) with a clean check... No penalty on the play.

Not only was I booed, but I was also spoken to after the game. My response was "it was a legal check and within the rules, if she wants to play in our league then she needs to be ready for that, otherwise she shouldn't be here. She shouldn't receive and doesn't deserve special treatment..." Could anyone argue against that? No.

I love hockey and I love the NHL, but my biggest fear of women joining the league is that they'd be seriously injured playing against bigger, stronger and faster men... Just imagine a 5'6 130lbs female going into the corner Chara
Furthermore, we'd likely have a bunch of equal rights groups and Feminazi's lobbying the league to change it's rules to accommodate women joining the league, when in actuality it should be the women who should accepting of the league's rules and style of play.

I'm all for the development and progression on women's hockey, I just think it's in everybody's best interest on a number of levels if they had their own leagues at the pro level.

That's the point, maybe once they realize they are NOT equal to mean athletically speaking they will stop wanting equality and begging for there women's sports back. They only want equality in specific things, I say if they want equality make them equal on every playing field period. If the are equal then why do we even have women's sports? We should just have sports with the best athletes weather there men or women. Then we will see who is equal.

A women could possibly be a goalie. Why not? We had a women Prime Minister and there will likely soon be a women President, so that'd be awesome to see one in the NHL.

Besides goalie I could see a women make the MLB as a knuckle-baller.

Here's hoping we see it.

i'm assuming whomever spoke to you after the game didn't see things your way.

can you imagine if it were a male player skating with his head down and you chose not to blow him up? you'd probably still be doing laps and/or push ups.

Men + Women + Contact sports = Bad.

Of all pro-sports, baseball, golf and auto-racing are easily the best fit for men and women to play together.

Ummm...perhaps you can see that the PHYSICAL demands of being a professional athelete and one being a politician differ...a tad.

It was my coach that spoke to me. Clearly, he didn't like the play, but as I said, he couldn't argue with my stand point ether.
