allowing her to debut with HC Salamat in the Suomi-sarja, the third highest hockey league in Finland, on January 10, 2003.[10] Wickenheiser played briefly with Salamat in 2004. They had won promotion to Mestis, Finland's second tier of professional hockey, and this was not as good a fit for her. She left the team after ten games.
That's from the wiki page about Hayley Wickenheiser.
The Gretzky of female hockey couldn't compete in Finland's tier 3 league. |

Well considering the calibre is equal to Midget AAA hockey, and the national women's team have been known to lose to those teams, I would strongly doubt you see another goalie even given a sniff. The hockey is brutal. They can skate, but that's about it. It shouldn't be in the Olympics until they have 4 competitive nations. |

No. And Manon Rheaume was a publicity stunt by a new franchise trying to make the headlines in their city. - mlindsay
Not even a full game, ONE period, and 2 goals against. |

When a Leaf fan is hadning a Panther fan a back handed compliment, and the Sabres fan comments, then you know it's really, really, bad |

A women could possibly be a goalie. Why not? We had a women Prime Minister and there will likely soon be a women President, so that'd be awesome to see one in the NHL.
Besides goalie I could see a women make the MLB as a knuckle-baller.
Here's hoping we see it. - James_Tanner
yeah, those are two of the candidates, the other would be place kicker in football. a few years ago a japanese girl named eri yoshida was attempting to become a professional sidearm knuckleballer. its harder than it looks. women just dont throw as hard- i believe she topped out around 63 mph, probably ok for a knuckleball, but wayyy too slow if thats her fastball (occasionally, like when you fall behind 3-0, you want to be able to throw a fastball for a strike). if a womans body will limit them from throwing in the high 70s, even the gimmicky stuff wont fly. |

When Brown ran into Bernier or when Lucic crushed Miller the talk was just of the repercussions from the team mates. What do you think would happen if a female goalie was run like that by a 200+ pound man. Or what would be an appropriate response if she throws a blocker in the chin of an opposing forward? |

My gf is a feminist and always pushing for equality in sport. She's always concerned with how much tv and time women's sports get compared to the men. I try to explain to her that it comes down to the almighty dollar. Men are just built to be "higher, faster, stronger" by genetics. I feel people in general like to watch the highest, fastest, strongest, and hence more attention is put to that by the tv networks. It doesn't mean women are inferior people or athletes. They just aren't built to compete with men. That's why a woman PROBABLY wont play in the NHL.
Not only that, but I think it would mess with the mens' heads..."can I hit this lady? should I charge the net like usual? It would change the dynamic. Not to mention where would she change pre and post game? She would be totally isolated from the team atmosphere. - TBroad
Wow, she sounds like a blast to hang out with. |

Never is a long time.
Given the size and strength of current goalies it is unlikely in my lifetime. |

So tired of the "equality" argument, like we are all freaking clones. Whether biological, intelligence, etc.......
Everyone has the "freedom" to tryout for something, doesn't mean everyone has an equal chance to succeed.
The kid who ate crayons, and sniffed glue in school and goes for an interview to be a CEO is not equally likely to get it as the kid that was in all honors courses. |

Begs the question...would a woman want to play in the NHL? And would a woman, knowing full well what sports means to men as far as male bonding goes, want to know she is contributing to a distraction to the TEAM by putting her personal goals first? All of this kinda takes away from the fundamentals of team chemistry. - Jeropotato

All it takes is the mere printing of the word "feminist" to cause sexist numbskulls to freak out at the suggestion that women are anything other than walking vaginas put on this earth to please men. I'm sure all your wives and girlfriends would appreciate the deep and abiding respect you have for them. |
