After a 3-1 win against Norway to end group B on the 3rd spot on Sunday a group of players celebrated way too heavy. Until up to 6 am the players hung out drinking In the Austria House and a local club in Krasnaya Polyana.
“We had a real chance to reach the quarterfinals I don’t know why this happened, especially before what is most likely the most important game for modern era Austrian ice hockey. It was a shock what happened after the game against Norway,” Austrian head coach Manny Viveiros told the media on Wednesday afternoon.
Viveiros is especially disappointed by Thomas Vanek who he made team captain. According to ÖEHV (Austrian Ice Hockey Federation) president Dieter Kalt: “He also chose Vanek as team captain to have an experienced player and this obviously went wrong”. The star forward of the New York Islanders and his NHL colleagues Michael Grabner and Michael Raffl apologized in a letter for their behaviour. |

Thank god Vanek won't be a UFA and on the Flyers' radar this summer... oh wait. |

I don't think he will be. He's probably going to Minnesota, and fitting his $7+ million cap hit would require trades and not upgrading the defense at all.
But we already have Raffl. |

Trade for Grabner then? They just lost JT for the year... maybe we can give them Giroux. |

Have to admit, I wanted Giroux to make the team because I felt he deserved it and he wanted to go, and also, you can get hurt anytime, doing anything.
But yeah, I'm pretty much glad that he's not the one who got hurt over there and is out for the season |

G deserved to be on the team, but I'm glad he was left off. Rooting against Canada is too much fun. |

I wonder how losing Tavares will effect the Islanders in the standings? I wonder if they can manage to finish last in the Metro without him. |

What a nightmare. This is the kind of injury that can have career altering effects too. - MBFlyerfan
I'd like to hear one of those knucklehead reporters with stars in their eyes over in Sochi tell an Islander season ticket holder how great it is to shut the (frank)ing league down in the middle of the season to play in the Olympics. |

The guy would do absolutely nothing to help the speed factor of this team, but I cant help but wonder if he would be game for another year. - flyer_nutter
The loss of step is an issue, but nobody seems to be as happy playing hockey as Jagr. In retrospect, I wish we'd never let him go. |

And that right there is why I didn't lose once minute of sleep over Giroux not being invited to the Olympics. I'm still pissed Finland is alive. (though I love that they beat Russia)
I really believe Timonen, who has been banged up, should have stayed home.

I think the only way Timonen wouldn't have played in this Olympics, this year, is if one of his limbs had been removed.
And even then, I'm not so sure. Kimmo is pretty tough.

It would have gotten him rest he typically can't get during the season. Still, I'm happy he's over there fighting for Olympic gold as this stage of his career. Not to be a downer, but it seems likely his career will end without ever hoisting Lord Stanley, and not for a lack of anything on his part.
I mean, I'm still cheering for USA all the way, but I'd be very happy to see him win too. |

There was fine logic behind letting him go and all, but it was still a mistake in retrospect (imo). He brought cosmic balance to the roster. |

It was a terrible, terrible mistake to let him go. I seriously hope we try and re-acquire him. He can still play and his leadership and effect in the dressing-room is unparalleled. |

Maybe. He'll be another season and a half worse for wear. Regardless, I'd be very happy to see him back. But who knows? If they trade from the forward ranks to bolster the blueline, they might need an extra scoring forward. Hey, a fan can dream, right?

In 2006 an injury to Hasek at the Olympics might have cost Ottawa the Cup. This nothing by comparison, assuming Tavares is fit to start next season.

It's not the reporters' fault. The players all want to play. |

I was referring to some of the reports I've read from reporters in Sochi tsk-tsking anyone who thinks Olympic participation is bad for the NHL.
It's a poopty deal for NHL fans. Especially those that buy tickets to games. |
