With Yashin, Blake, Satan, Sillinger, and Poti, Garth had a few legitimate assets when he took over. A 69 point man and two 59 point men, he had some assets. He had no respect as a GM around the league. I feel Patty instantly gets more respect. We'll see who does better in the next few years. - David_Volek

And that GM takes over a team with a few legit assets
XxNYIxX - XxNYIxX
Exactly...Buffalo is an a good spot, because they had two superstars and a bunch of kids already. They're already half rebuilt, and now they have more assets to rebuild with. Completely different situation than the train wreck Dinglebury left us with- medicore at the NHL level, with NO (as in ZERO) prospects (we had NO farm team before Wang bought the Sound Tigers....allow me to repeat that: NO farm team...NONE...and we didn't have enough live bodies at the pre-NHL level to field a full roster even if we had one). Snow had to implode the building, haul away the crap, and then start building a brand new foundation- that takes A LOT of time, especially when you seem to be scared sh*tless to move any of the assets you've piled up to upgrade the team in a more immediate time frame.
That said, if Buffalo goes with ALL kids the way we have, and patiently waits for them to develop, it'll be four years before they're any good...just like us, the only difference being that they have a real coach who actually knows what he's doing, which will shorten the time span a little bit- it'll be 3-4 years, instead of 6-7. I still say there would be a HUGE difference in the success of this team if we had a legit NHL coach here to guide them properly- in fact, if they fired him today and hired Laviolette (for one example, you can insert your favorite candidate as well), they'd probably win about 15 of their remaining games, ending up at least near, if not over, .500. |

The only two of those guys who were worth anything were Sillinger and Poti, and Sillinger got hurt and never came back. No one on Earth would have ever been stupid enough to trade for Yashin except the guy who did trade for him , Satan was washed up, and Blake had a reputation for being an a$$hole in the locker room, which means we'd have gotten a middling draft pick, at best. I do wish we had moved Poti at the deadline before he became a free agent, because defensemen usually bring back more than they're worth (which is why I hope Snow moves MacDonald for the first decent item he gets offered, before it's too late), but other than that, Dinglebury's cavalcade of mediocrity wasn't really worth sh*t. VERY different situation than Vanek, who is the prize of this deadline, especially now that Miller is out of the picture. |

Patty isnt the GM he is President of Hockey Operations, But lets break this down for ya.. You feel that Yashin, Satan, Sillinger & Poti = Miller, Vanek, Ott.
Yashin was not an asset due to that contract & reputation.. in fact once he was bought out, he never played again in the NHL.
Sillinger retired an islander due to Injury.. not an asset
Poti.. Ok we could have gotten a third rounder
Satan.. maybe a second rounder
Blake was the only one we maybe could have gotten something for, he was our Amac back then.. the player putting up pretty stats but we as Islander fans knew sucked massive balls.
But to even hint that you think any GM could have turned that list of turds into the 1st round pick fest that buffalo is doing.. is just silly.
Tim Murray is the GM in Buffalo.

Ive seen worse, ive seen better... I look at what he has built since the start of the rebuild and what is coming down the pipeline & I don't question his vision. He's building a very good team, which is what a GM is supposed to do.
My only knocks on him are not getting anything for Streit or PAP & keeping this lame @ss coach.

Good thing this trade gets done last night.
It now sets the bar for other teams to try and get better in the west, and what they need to pay to get it done.
Plus with Girardi signing... it tell AMac's agent he is worth less than the 5.5 million he was asking for.
This season was a waste of time and money.

He's a UFA at the end of this season, the kid has major skills. I hope he gets a good enough amount of starts to end this season on a high.
knowing this coaching staff... he will get 1 start every 7 games.

Too hesitant, to me. We DO have assets..it's just that if you patiently wait for ALL of them to develop, especially when, as I said, you have the Pied Piper coaching your team, the "rebuild" takes a decade. I understand the hesitation to some extent- ignoring Neil Smith's cup of coffee here, he followed someone who likely made three of the ten worst trades in NHL history- but at some point, you have to start making things happen a little quicker than they have been. As I have said before, if the man can somehow turn Vanek into a solid NHL caliber goalie, they will be pretty good in a couple of years, provided he eventually wakes up and sh*t cans this coach.
However, some of us feel we have waited long enough, and wouldn't mind seeing a couple of those prospects go in exchange for a defenseman who knows what he is doing, while Garth is at it. The Vanek thing should be a no brainer; the second idea is going to require a little bit more thought- that's what he gets paid for, so he might as well start earning it. Maybe he's just incapable- he also comes across as arrogant to me, which might be part of why he can never seem to get a deal done. You can't talk to the other guy like he's an a$$hole just because he's trying to protect HIS assets in a trade discussion; that's his job. You have to be a salesman in his position, and he doesn't strike me as being someone who has that skill...maybe it's just a perception, but it certainly would explain the perpetual inertia that we see in regards to this team. |

Actually, he's a RFA...but yes....I'd like to see what he can do. Of course, with our defensive game plan, he's going to have to be REALLY good in order to impress anyone. I'm wondering if he's being brought up to play for the scouts who are looking at Vanek....hopefully, Snow is trying to get someone to part with a more "ready" goaltender. |

How do you figure?? Amac has a better carrer PPG then DG, more blocked shots, more ice time.. if anything.. his agent now thinks Amac is worth MORE then 5.5

I thought he was a RFA but i stupidly went by hockeybuzz rather then Capgeek's info.
Id hate to see the team move him.. he has so much potential.

Yeah, it's a funny thing how stats work in terms of a contract- I'd take Girardi in a heartbeat over MacDonald, but MacDonald looks better on paper except +/-, which the agent always tries to blame on the team....of course, the team might be minus because the players are, but the agents never look at it that way. Then again, if you use advanced stats like Corsi, the picture of MacDonald being nowhere near worthy of Girardi becomes clearer. For a team with a coach who talks a lot of sh*t about "puck possession", this one certainly doesn't do much of it, and MacDonald is one of the worst. I wouldn't trade you Girardi for MacDonald AND a first round pick, no way. |

Yeah, I just think if he can develop with a team that isn't sh*t in front of him, he's going to become a good NHL goalie. Of course, right now that would mean staying in Connecticut, instead of trying to block this crumbling dam. |
