Look at what Khudobin did when he got the chance on a poor Carolina team.

Why would he just retire and walk away from the money? It would actually be another $1.25 million a year on LTIR to go with Pronger. I don't understand why you would even consider a three year deal for a goalie with hips bad enough that they might realistically render him unable to play in the near future.

i think khudobin is an underrated guy. could start somewhere and be decent

Brayden Schenn has been dominating today for Team Canada, even apart from his goal.

Just sayin'. Maybe giving the guy two wingers is kinda what the Flyers REALLY need to be doing.

- AllInForFlyers

Who Schenn played with, was not an issue. Maybe it also has to do with the level of competition also.

Exactly -- people think you can't miss the playoffs because of your backup goalie. Sure you can. You absolutely can. Those 8-15 more goals you give up could mean regulation losses instead of wins or OTLs.

It's a fine line to walk. But cheaping out on the backup goaltender can straight-up bite you in the ass

- AllInForFlyers

Nobody's talking about settling for a bad goalie to save a few bucks... I just don't think the relationship between backup performance and dollars spent is linear. Looking around the league, there are far more backups that performed well on small deals, than guys who were paid as 1B's or veteran insurance who did well.

Man, I'm about ready to bare-knuckle street-fight anyone who is ready to trade that guy so another team can give him two wingers and watch him be the player he can be
- AllInForFlyers

I'm ready to trade him for the right return. Not willing to trade him just to trade him, or because of a lack of patience or being unhappy with the player.

Say Option A costs $1.6M and Option B costs $1M

Now, let's say they each play 20 games.

Option A records a .915 Save%. Option B records a .900 Save%.

- PhillySportsGuy

Emery this season - $1.65m cap hit, 28 games, .903 SV% (starter was .917)

Griess - $750K, 25 games, .920 SV% (starter was .915)

Montoya - $601K, 28 games, .920 SV% (starter was .901)

Option A
20 games. 30 shots/game = 600 shots * (1-0.915) = 51

Option B
20 games. 30 shots/game = 600 shots * (1-.900) = 60

During those 20 games, Option A will allow about 0.5 less goals per game than Option B.

Upgrading the defense goes a long way towards cutting goals against. And since an upgrade in defense, is going to be on the ice a lot more then the backup goalie should be. I think spending that money to upgrade the defense, is a much better investment.

There's hardly any variance in goaltending from year-to-year. Good plan.
- bradleyc4

your plan is to switch goaltenders every year, or just every other year

It's a really poor assumption to assume that people don't realize that you can miss the playoffs, if the starter goes down to injury, and the backup doesn't play well.

Yeah, it was an issue. It was absolutely an issue. Just because a person doesn't like the answer doesn't mean that isn't the answer -- would Braydon Coburn be better off playing with Bruno Gervais?

Would Claude Giroux score 87 points with Zac Rinaldo and Jay Rosehill as his wingers?

Who you play with always matters.

Far too many variables in play to just look at numbers.

OK. I'm just stating my preference is go to with a cheaper, younger, healthier goalie who also had much better numbers this season.

In terms of Schenn being held back in his development, I don't think it was. He was inconsistent all year. That has as much to do with him as a player, as it does with who he played with. he shares a lot of the culpability in the inconsistency.

Maybe it's just as poor an assumption to assume that replacing the backup you have with someone else will automatically result in equal to or better performance?

I agree with that preference. I want Emery back, but 1.65M is too much to spend on the backup.

I've never stated that it would. My point is that the Flyers have bigger needs, and can't afford to pay the backup what they paid last season.

No issue with sticking with the same starting goalie. Just don't expect similar stat lines from year-to-year.

If he retires due to injury, insurance would kick in and pay most of his salary and the team would be responsible for the difference. However, the cap hit comes off the books as he would not be on an over 35 deal.

Pronger would be retired already and would still have gotten his money, but because he's on an over 35 deal, he is forced to stay active or he would hurt the Flyers cap situation.

They could clearly pay the backup 3M if they chose to. Would that be a wise move? Maybe afford was the wrong term, but that's just arguing semantics. The Flyers have bigger priorities, where they need to spend their available cap assets. Is that a better terminology?
