Florida makes sense... As for what the return would be, who knows. I'd assume a 2nd or 3rd maybe? - Flyers_V88
I don't think Florida makes sense at all. To move Vinny, you've got to consider why he signed with Philly to begin with. Holmgren and Laviolette more then likely sold him on how committed they are to winning. The Florida Panthers don't exactly have a winner track record. |

BAP, and don't get too stressed out either way. No one knows what a kid will do, some will make it and some won't. Just the nature of the beast, and you do the best you can - AllInForFlyers
I agree. Which is why I find it puzzling when a draft pick is highly criticized before even playing a single second of pro hockey. |

The fact that the 2014 NHL Draft will be held in Philadelphia does not increase the possibility that the Philadelphia Flyers will make a major trade on Draft weekend. It also does not make it more likely that the team will swing a deal to move up from the 17th spot in the first round. Likewise, new general manager Ron Hextall will not be "looking to make a big splash" simply for the sake of grabbing attention and headlines. - bmeltzer
Here here.
Last time the hosting team picked in the top-3 was 1990 in Vancouver, when they took Nedved #2, and it was their own pick.
The "splash" scenario is recited each and every draft by the home fan base, as if it's common sense or a forgone conclusion or something... yet it hasn't happened once in the last 25-years. |

Depends on the definition of a splash. Lamoriello traded his first round pick to Vancouver for Schnieder. Is that a splash? |

I'd take that.
What about to Florida for say Flieshmann and a pick. I could see that as a swap of bad deals with Vinny and Flieshmann. Flieshmann does have some skill and is a winger. - J35Bacher
Huberdeau, Barkov, Bjugstad, Grimaldi, Trocheck... what exactly are they going to do w/ Vinny? Play him on the wing? |

Schneider last year and Jordan Staal the year before.
Both were coincidental though. NJ needed a future goalie and the Pens needed to unload Staal because he wasn't willing to sign an extension. |

We were talking about the host team trading into the top-3, or make a wild grab at 1st-overall... right?
Trading away your 1st-round pick would seem to be the furthest thing from that. |

I'll admit to criticizing Laughton when he was drafted but I still have the same concerns as I did two years ago. Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn at the time were just a year removed from being traded to Philly. Couturier and Schenn were and still are two very young centermen. So I have to ask myself, if Laughton really is NHL ready, where and how does he fit? Easy answer, Laughton plays on the fouth line or one young center switches to wing. Can any of them adjust to wing? I don't believe in the term "Best Player Available" for the reasons you mentioned. Things don't always workout. Some players cannot adjust to the next level. I think the team should always trade to fill the needs of the team. |

Their line of thinking could be that they need a veteran presence and a guy to help on the PP. Florida's PP was awful last year. The worst by a lot. |

I agree with the basic premise. I don't think the draft being located in Philly, is going to be any factor in the Flyers decision making. And I also don't think it did in NJ. nad yea, I agree it was coincidental. But it could be called a splash. |

Yeah. I wouldn't take VL if I was any team. I'm just trying to rationalize what another team might do. Florida needs a lot of help on their special teams. Just take a look at how bad their special teams were. |

I'm with you on that; I have as many opinions as anyone, but I freely admit that I'm baffled at how people live to criticize draft picks.
Give them time to develop, give them opportunities when they earn them, don't close doors prematurely, live with the mistakes of a young player that you drafted because that's the only way they'll grow. Don't bail on a young player you drafted simply because another flavor of the week becomes available.
Don't depend on a rookie/young player to save your season/franchise -- it's great when it happens, but all prospects are suspects until proven otherwise. Depending on them for immediate production sets up unreasonable expectations, and people will often be disappointed.
This stuff isn't rocket science. |

Funny thing is we say that about teams on why would they do that or do this and yet they still think they are smart enough get the best out of said player. Some team might look at Vinny and say "hey, he scored 20 on 2nd pp and some 4ht line ime, maybe he can do more on 1st pp and contant 2nd line minutes. " |

Yeah, Vinny might nudge them a percentage point or two upward, but they could achieve the same by bringing in a decent winger or two and not have to sacrifice ES/defensive play and minutes for the kids like they would w/ Vinny.
Edit: There's little chance their team 7% shooting is repeated... league average is 11-12% on the PP. |
