Allright stripes. Question. What gives with calling tripping and diving on the same play? I understand that both can be legit, but does it really discourage the soccer style embellishment? - rover16
The simple answer is no...
Diving at least in the NCAA is a stand alone penalty. Embellishment you dish out the original infraction and then the 2 to the player that embellished.
It is something that is being looked into heavily. Whether giving the 2 and a 10 minute misconduct for embellishment or as Stewy wrote last week making it a 5 minute major for embellishment which I like but I doubt it ever gets passed.
I can't say I have ever called a trip and an embellishment on the same play but I have called a hook and an embellishment before. |

I liked that concept as well. I think it would be really effective because unlike a 2 minute penalty, if there is no whistle that guy might sit there and extra few minutes besides the 5. You could argue the same thing happens for fighting, but fighters generally need the rest after anyways. |

The big issue I could see with that is officials being very very cautious in handing them out especially to a team like cough cough Boston that have seemed to have taught the "art" of embellishment to an almost perfection.
Not only that but it will put a lot of pressure on refs that knowing not only are they not going to handing out a powerplay on the original infraction but the other team is going to get a 3 minute power play. |

I agree. Its tough to get the refs to be tough on judgment calls that happen in a slit second. It would likely be used mostly in playoff series where you have the same players game in and game out with the same antics. |

Agreed. Hockey unfortunately will always be different when it comes to officiating than the other major sports IMO, if you change the rules to increase an embellishment or diving penalty, it will just get called less.
The reason they should increase it to a major is for players to stop doing it in general |

The way to make it a non factor going forward is call the major for diving early and often in the season and it should go away. But as soon as there is a relaxing of a bit players will dive back on the dive train.
It's a shame that diving is a part of the game these days, it didn't happen very often back in the day mostly because players that dove got the crap kicked out of them by teammates. |

In the NFL for example, they want to eliminate targeting the head but they do it all wrong.
A defensive back nearly decapitates a receiver. The refs throw a flag, penalize the defense 15 yards and an automatic 1st down. So yeah the offense gets a first down, but many times the receiver in injured or shaken up, and the defender is on the field still. Then the league fines him $25,000 or the equivalent of a parking ticket to me our you. They should be ejecting players for at least a half. |

or the defender takes the player out at the knee immediately ending his career.. Football is a contact sport, i dont know what to say other than change it to flag football |

In the best case scenario Florida Takes Bennett Buffalo calls Edmonton offers the 2nd for Yakupov and the 3rd, then we call calgary trade the 3rd for their 4th and a prospect & pick and then draft Leon Draisaitl with the 4th over all pick. |

That makes no sense, why would we do that just get a lazy russian we don't need. I'll pass on Draisaitl |

I'd say the best scenario would be if FLA takes Bennett, we trade #2 and #39 to EDM for #3 and Klefbom, they pick Ekblad, and we pick Reinhart. |

None of us are GMs and you asked us if your deal sounded OK, hence why I turned it around to ask you if you think it would sound good if that offer was being made to "your" team.
Them lacking a 2nd and a 3rd this year is offset by having #3 overall. If they do your trade, they have no 1st this year (not just ANY first, but #3).
I keep the 1st if I'm them. - stashu
Would I do it?
Probably not.
I realize I asked you guys the question.
All I meant when I said that I wasn't a GM was that maybe MacT might view getting 3 more picks out of it as a good thing, which none of us knows.

Ugh. Thats fine, if murray thinks the other forwards are duds and ekblad is something special, but that pushes the rebuild back one full year. Unless grigorenko develops into a viable number 2, we dont have two top line centers. I think they have to grab one this year and one next year. Then use the isles pick on a winger that can finish. Im not gonna be mad if they draft him, it just doesnt make a whole lotta sense though. - rover16
Im so sick of hearing this. If we take a forward that is a dud, cause we need a forward, that hurts the rebuild, just as much, if not worse. |

I definitely agree with this. If whomever we pick fails, then we are taking a step back. I fully believe Murray will be picking the player that helps us the most in the longrun. Which like many have said fits into his "going outside the box" model that he has followed. If that means he doesn't pick one of the top-4, then so be it. We are hoping for the best possible pick next year anyway so giving ourselves the best chance at that, while preparing for 2-3 years from now, isn't a very bad idea. |

My point how does the player get to continue playing no the field? No ejection? |

I would be ok dropping back a spot or two and grabbing Draisaitl. The NHL is about puck control and that's one of his strongest assets.
That being said I still hope we get Bennet |

I'de be fine with him too. I would prefer Reinhart to Bennet only if they think Bennet is going to be a wing in the NHL and not a center. |

Draisaitl intrigues me, but Reinhart is probably the safer pick. Reading that Devine thinks he's the best playmaker to come out of junior in ten or fifteen years gets me excited |

I'd say best case scenario we trade our 1st this year and ehrhoff to florida for their 1st, the nhl provides mcdavid exceptional status and we pick him this year and get eichel next year |

Good God almighty, that would be sweet.
And if we were able to land one of McEichel next year...
