just in from a great Canada Day and haven't read any of the 424 posts.....

So, how does it feel to trade our best player for that?????

as I posted earlier on the Chicago page- and got slammed - at least a deal to Chicago for Oduya and Versteeg would have landed us a T4 defenseman....

Hemsky signing there is only salt in the wounds.....

Well settle in guys for a 4 year rebuild ........ f_ck

It feels awful, to me.

We didn't get good value for one of my favourite all time Senators. Oh well, not much anyone could do I guess.

We could be in worse shape, but not by much... If Ryan hasn't extended by the start of the season, I think we should be prepared for that 4 year rebuild of which you speak.

Murray is clearly frustrated by the perception that Ottawa is being viewed as a frugal team that's not willing to spend.

"I've never had one player I've called and asked if they would be interested in coming to Ottawa say 'No I'm worried about the money on your team and I wouldn't come,'" said Murray. "Perception is what you make it to be and what you really believe to be true. I think players know they come here and are treated well."

The team is 700k under the cap floor with 1 player (Lehner) to re-sign. Pretty much everyone and their dog knows the Sens are operating with an internal cap. Melnyk
has to go, and be replaced by an owner who is willing to spend the extra 15-20 million per year.

Need to see this team come up and sign the players we need to sign Ryan ,Mac etc.I had expected this to be done already ,but now iam not so sure if we can get either signed .The ownership needs to step up here and keep our talent .The ball is EM court ,time to pay up

Cheapo had better realize that all the media money that just flowed in will be offset by the empty seats he has when he doesn't spend any coin on players.

Team performance has been very average since the Cup final in'07, but the presence of stars has made it worth going to the rink, because there were many capable of great performances that might lift the team over anybody.

Now cheapo has us down to only one truly exciting player, one above average line, and a goalie who has had runs of exceptional.

I am not crazy about Murray's performance either over recent times - got little for Spez, gave away Bishop, really had no plan in the Ryan deal. Today he is under the league minimum with nothing left out there, and probably in a position to get an average player next draft after Ryan leaves town.

If Spezza was going to bring a limited return, he needed to throw Anderson into the pot, and come up with a great prospect and a top pick or two, get a veteran back up, and pray that Lehner emerges.

Gene, this isn't the Florida Marlins, you won't fluke anything out on a crappy budget, especially loaded with B+ prospects. Get out of the NHL and back to junior, where you can lord over a bunch of kids and puppet control them like you want to.

That is most certainly your best course of action when you are getting your ass handed to you. It is better than just calling everyone stupid and then looking for respectful dialogue.

I am sure everyone will miss you.

Joke.

I agreed with your earlier post but honestly dude chill

speaking to everyone, i don't like people that come on this site (or life in general) that discuss things just to make themselves feel smart (or more likely to make other people feel stupid) ... I think it says enough in someones character to say "your right" or "you know I don't agree with you but you right to your own opinion"

anyway I just wanted to say that...

as far as Murray's handling of the situation... I just hate the fact he didn't anything close to what he wanted (as it seemed)

1st round pick - No! (why is that always the case)
Top prospect- No!
Top 6 forward - MAYBE. Chiasson has a lot to prove here

The Ottawa Senators need to get the rebuild back on track.

"tanking" is exactly what Ottawa needs to do but they do need to have good vets (play hard and help guide the young players) and yes, do stay low in the standings.

The Sens already have young top 6 forwards in Turris, Lazar, Zibanejad, Puempel, Stone (?) but still need to make

On defense things look good on paper (Karlsson, Cowen, Ceci, Weircioch, Boroweici, Englund) all 24&under but the fact is that the group needs to develop properly and learn how to mature confidently.

So far MacArthur & Ryan & Neil up front.... Methot & Phillips on the back end are the only vets on this team. 25&4 might have 1 or 2 "good years" of hockey in them.... and the rest are UFAs

Meh,lots of teams dont have a clear number 1 center and do fine

Oh, like the Blues? But I will leave that on another thread...I like to talk hockey in general, and the Sens as a team are an interesting case, IMO.

The Sens do seem to have a fair amount of young talent, spread throughout the roster. Maybe not the best, but certainly enough to be competitive in the weaker Eastern Conference. There does seem to be a huge problem in retaining the young through experienced vets to help integrate the really young guys into the NHL, show them the way. By contrast, Buffalo is addressing that with their trades/signings, even though many of their best prospects will be in the AHL or lower next year. Still, they are building that framework to support the young guys taking on more responsibility as the next few years pass. Super-smart, if you ask me.

If Ryan can't be signed to be a main bridge guy, who takes pressure off the younger guys, you need to trade him and consider a larger rebuild. I would say a re-tooling, but IMO, a retooling means some vets are staying around to be a part of it (i.e. Canucks), and that doesn't seem to be the case there for the most part, esp. if Ryan departs. Your vets are currently mostly leaving when they can, and you need to accept that fact (temporarily) and adjust your expectations accordingly. I realize your owner may suck and be a big part of the problem, but allowing young players to stumble around, hoping they find their way to the promised land sounds like the Oilers or Islanders model the past few years.

Good news is the turnover can be relatively quick. Who would have thought the Sabres could have attracted the players they did this July 1st with such a new GM doing his thing? And to not wildly overpay on any of the contracts to boot. I have no doubt they'll add a few more good, if older, apples next off-season to help speed things along.

Agreed - the Ryan extension just became absolutely necessary, because on paper this team is going into next season with an absurd number of question marks at virtually every major position, including who the actual leader of the team is.

God help them if they try to lowball Ryan this summer, and piss him or his agent off in the process... it simply can't happen that he walks next summer, or forces some kind of buyer's market trade deadline deal.

For the record, I want it noted that Murray should have moved Spezza at the trade deadline last year or long before. Hemsky complicated what was already a complex issue and caused everyone to lose sight of the long term game plan.

Chiasson appears to be a nice acquisition and a really good fit. He is a big body and that appears to be the overriding requirement of the Murray rebuild. He likes big players.

Murray is trying to do a trade for another player. Apparently, it will include picks and prospects. Going into this week, I thought if Murray could role over all the return for Spezza (Chiasson, 2 prospects and a second) and, then, added a couple of his own prospects (Stone and Ceci), he might be able to do the deal for Evander Kane. Obviously, I would have been pleased. But, maybe that is now too much and I have to give up on the hope of getting Kane.

I will be disappointed if he is trading for Stewart.

But you cannot close the books on the Spezza deal until we see Murray's next trade.

I'm hoping that Murray sweeps in and steals Patrick Sharp out of Chicago- they're currently 2.3 mil over the cap.

i don't mind the spezza trade at all......i dislike the lack of any other move, when there were so many good players, who could help this team, available.

granted, some of the contracts signed yesterday were beyond ridiculous, and i'm glad murray didn't get sucked into some of those deals.......but that being said, there were still some very good signings made for good players, and he didn't get any of them.

i like the idea of possibly getting mcdavid, but if they're purposely trying to do it, i'm gonna be pissed.

can't imagine for one second that he'll waive to go from a cup contender, to a team that is, at this point, one of the favorites to win the draft lottery.

Murray was pretty strong yesterday in saying this is a good team and they will compete well next season. Did anybody in the East get any stronger yesterday?

Remember last year at this time everyone was enraged over Alfredsson signing in Detroit. It was something that had to happen for Ottawa to move forward. The Spezza situation is a lot cleaner. It is now Karlsson's team. The team and every game plan will be shaped to his game.

Sharp is as good as gone. Chicago does not want to take any salary back. So it is about prospects. But, I suspect your right he does not want to come to a rebuilding team.

Eriksson or Marchand might fit better.

Also, Colorado made some strange moves. They brought on a lot of short term salary with Briere and Iginla. They have some huge signings remaining. Perhaps they will be making moves.

Chill? After spatso has repeatedly said no one (but himself) understands anything going on and that everyone is an idiot/dumb/stupid the last thing anyone should do is chill. After posting all of the insults he had the gall to ask everyone to post with respect. Frank him and the high horse he came in on.

Absolutely. No player likes to lose. When stars like Karlsson and Ryan have a look around the league and then around their locker room and the organization they play for they certainly do not like what they see.

Look, just don't put yourself in the firing line again today. Your not that important. This is a great thread and people talk hockey in a respectful way. Your welcome to share with everyone as long as your respectful. But, if you disrespect the people here, you will, most certainly, be responded to in a similar manner.

that's debatable. some younger players might look and see that they're surrounded by good young players like themselves, and realize that it could grow into something special.

i think the idea of getting a big group of young guys together, and allowing them to grow and develop together, could be something that young guys enjoy.

it's obviously not gonna be an attractive situation for veteran players...but i could see the lure for the younger guys.
