If there is one thing that concerned me about yesterday it was that there was no Bobby Ryan extension announced. I was expecting to hear that a long-term deal to keep him in Ottawa had been put in place.

If that doesn't go well and the Sens have to trade him then they are definitely taking a step back into full rebuild mode.

a couple of other interesting signings, for different reasons .....

Orpik in Washington ..... ouch 5 years??

Matt Niskanen signed a 7 year deal!!! wow that's a long term for a guy that had one good season

I was surprised that Statsny only signed for 4 years and Hemsky for 3 ......

not to beat a dead horse, but Ottawa could have signed Hemsky and Michalek for 3 years and extended Spezza for three - which was seen as impossible on these threads. Most assumed that it would hav to be long term deal for Spezza/Hemsky

- GadesnSens

According to Murray Spezza would not extend.

That Orpik deal was the worst. Flashing capital letters "BUYOUT" bad.

It is concerning. I doubt Ryan wants to extend unless the money is unreal and he has a full NTC - even then he may not want to extend here and no one should blame him.

it's obvious they didn't want to play in ottawa. murray could have offered them the farm, and they likely wouldn't have taken it. i think any amount that was enough to keep them, but have been a terrible overpayment, and something that the team and all of us would have hated within a couple of years.

This is simply wishful thinking outside of the sale of the club. No amount of restructuring, refinancing or reorganization will improve the club with the current ownership in place.
- HoweHatrick

Restructuring means new ownership composition. It can be an entirely different person or it can be an institutional creditor simply taking possession of their secured asset in order to sell off the security. Or, it can be new investment (unlikely) from another party. Regardless how it is done it would require a discharging of all or a substantial portion of the Melnyk debt.

Remember Ottawa us well into the top half of revenue earners, especially with their new local TV deal. The problem is not revenues and it obviously not expenditures. The problem is accumulated debt, many of us believe it is actual cash debt rather than a book debt created for tax purposes. Team will be sold. But, I am not going a prediction route this summer. Melnyk if nothing else is tenacious. Most people would have given in by now. The Casino, I thought, was his Hail Mary. But, he is obviously still saying his rosary and praying for a miracle.

I don't think you will hear about any problems in a Ryan extension. Either he resigns or we wake one morning in the next couple of weeks to discover that he was traded overnight.

The Ryan trade was a knee jerk reaction to the Alfredsson public relations mess. He is a better fit than I thought and popular in the dressing room. He is far easier to move than Spezza as long as Murray takes back substantial salary. But when your a rebuilding team UFAs do leave. They want to win now.

Ryan is 3 years older than the talent core of the Senators. Tough call, we will see. I hope he does stay, but my primary concern is that Murray does not overpay. Toews and Kane started off by asking for $12m. Ouch, very steep.

New Rumour on the main window:

Rumor: Chicago-Ottawa Blockbuster Discussed

"Basic parameters of deal would be: Patrick Sharp and Nick Leddy to Ottawa for Colin Greening, Zack Smith and 2013 1st round selection, Curtis Lazar. I have heard of Hawk interest in Greening and Smith now from two separate sources in the U.S. and Canada."

All I can say is NOOOO. I could actually see a deal like this but without Lazar. Could be Chicago who is mulling over the prospect(s) that Murray alluded to in yesterday's presser.

No chance Lazar gets traded. If he does, that might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me as a Sens fan with all of the bullpoop going on.

After a little capgeek time it actually makes sense from a Chicago perspective.

Sharp and Leddy make a combined $8.6 mil
Greening and Smith make a combined $4.54 mil so Ottawa would be taking on about $4.1 which is a little more than what it would take (with the Lehner contract) to get us to the reported $56 mil level.

Chicago needs to make a little cap wiggle room and have been reported to have interest in Greening and Smith.

Who would Chicago want and who would we be willing to give up?

Eghh that deal is both terrifying and intriguing.

Adding Leddy would be great but Sharp only has two years left however, if they do this it could probably convince Ryan to resign but man losing Lazar would definately hurt us down the road.

I wonder if Chicago would be interested if we swapped out Lazar and put in Weircoch and Prince

Sharp and Leddy for Smith, Greening, Weircoch, Prince?

If I am chicago tho I want Lazar as the main piece of this deal

that deal makes no sense for ottawa.

we woud have 9 d-men on 1-way deals, and our depth at center would be non-existent.

if murray makes that deal, i truly believe it's time for him to be canned.

I dont like this deal at all ,we are already a center short, losing smith makes us even weaker. On top of that we get a player that is 33 years old ,and a defenseman that may or may not be better than what we already have .Plus we are adding lazar and greening .Yeah no (frank)en way this deal makes sense

Can't see Lazar being included in the deal from the Sens perspective. In fact, I imagine that was what was proposed to Murray, and he quickly shot it down and said, try one of our other prospects, and you've got a deal.

If you combine it with just about any other prospects, I'd say it's a done deal. Losing Smith hurts in my opinion, as he is an ideal candidate for 4th line Centre.

Don't think Chicago would even want prince but If u add say our 2nd rounder from dallas and Puempel maybe that gets things done.

This poor Lazar kid hasn't even played a game and he is going to have boat loads of pressure on him to perform

Every rebuilding team comes to a point where the older guys get impatient with the rebuild. On the other hand, it is those same older guys who are denying ice time to the younger guys. And, even more important, the older guys lose their hunger, their intensity.

Some of us always thought that the problem in Columbus was Rick Nash. You can trace the improvement (results) directly to their moving Nash. If you sign UFA's you deny ice time to the young guys. Ottawa has too many really good young guys in their system. Play them. Give them a chance. I would like to see Stone, Hoffman, Lazar, Puemple and Ceci dressing for the big team on opening night.

Add to the fact that Chicago NEEDS to dump salary, being 2.3 mil over the cap. Them taking on Greening though is basically giving us a piece.

I'd say a deal like Smith, Greening and a prospect (Puempel, Prince, Stone, Guptill, etc) gets that done and is fair, no?
