Can someone take a stab at explaining the timing on this one? Ottawa trades Spezza 30 minutes before free agency opens, instead of waiting a few days to see if they can drive the price up on trading him after teams miss out on "their guy" in free agency.

I get that it's taking a risk on the number of available trade partners, and that he requested a trade, but he's a legitimate #1 center, and those don't come on the market very often, so why not be patient to see if you can improve the return in the trade?

Ottawa's GM and owner are a disaster. Chiasson is a good prospect but nobody wants to spend on a guy who's going to bolt next season as a UFA

Wow..... I remember talking to some here about Spezza getting a haul. I said not w/the salary cap & limited trade places. So how'd that work out? Couldn't even get a 1st, which most here were adamantly demanding....

Priority #1 should be give Ryan an extension now or you will be in the same situation next year....

They were competing with Stastny. My guess is that Murray wanted to get something done before he had a chance to sign.

We got a rookie who scored 35pts in his first full season, 2 prospects, and a 2nd rd pick for ONE year of Spezza.

People who are unhappy with deal are completely out to to lunch.

Obviously Travis will female dog about it no matter what the return was

Shanny looks to be changing some things there, the way they drafted was very un leaf like this year. and I loved it. Nonis is a idiot though and so is Carlye

I'm also pointing out that the Sens owner is killing your team slowly here by not paying ppl. It's a crappy spot as fan, for sure. But Spezza, even will all his ppg stats, pulled barely anything as a return.

spezza pulled a decent return.

he got a young, top six forward. 2 decent prospects, and a 2nd rd pick in a deep draft.

the only team he would have likely extended with was st louis, and murray probably knew that, and so did dallas. which means it was a deal for 1 year of spezza.
