Yes. Flyers used both compliance buyouts already, date to buy a player out has passed and VL signed the deal AFTER the new CBA. Each of those reasons would prohibit a compliance buyout of VL. - PhillySportsGuy
The Flyers were able to get out of one very bad contract and let go an aging player making lots of money and what do they do? Give a very bad contract to an aging player. One day they will learn their lesson.

yes, i believe it is...but i don't recall it being a slash - as in brodeur intentionally hitting him...i think it was on a follow through of a pass or him swatting at the the puck and JL's face got in the way. - hammarby31

Not a fair assessment. Briere is at least 2 yeas older than Vinny and was making 2 mill more than him. Vinny has game left, I don't think 5 years was smart on our part but he still got 20 goals despite the clusterfrank he had t o deal with. There are a lot of 20 goal guys who make a lot more than he does

And why are they trying so despearatly to get trade him to free up cap space. Because he no longer has an upside and last year most likely would be the most productive season we will get out of him. Bottom line it was a bad contract.

So far nothing has happened this off-season that improves this team to being anything more than a 1st round playoff team. Until the Flyers can stop being handcuffed by the salary cap, that is all the future holds. Gonna be a long next couple of years. - Daveflyers36
After an abysmal start they took a very good Rangers team to game 7. Umberger and presumably Laughton will step in this year. I'm not saying theyre built for a Cup run but lets see what happens.

Are they desperate? I don't think they are or he would have been dealt already.
Edit - I think its more or less the media hype fueling the fire.

From what i heard so far it was because everyone has asked the flyers either to eat 2 mill/yr or take a bad contract back (ie .. not much cap relief at all).

A very good Rangers team? I guess you are impressed by their cinderella run to the cup. The Pens are not a playoff built team and Montreal lost Price in game 1. The Rags were not a cup team but because of some luck on their side they made it and pretty much faultered when they actually had to play a good team. The Flyers are nothing more than a wild card team with a 1st round exit. (Unless we get the Pens in the 1st round)

Okay, come back in a few years then when you think the team will be good. Dont waste your time subjecting yourself to further letdown if you're so sure of said letdown.

Media does this all the time. They had the 76ers offer for #1 up to #3, #10, #32 and Thad when in actuality the 76ers never put 10 on the table with 3.
No team is willing to take on that contract or else he would be gone. Yes they are desperate to unload Vinnie. - Daveflyers36
Although it seems the flyers would like to move Vinny I dont think they are 'desperate' to unload him.... I think it's an impatient fanbase that's desperate. Hexy still has 3 months to get cap compliant and there are multiple ways to do so.

Show me the errors of my thinking. Convince me this is a good team or can be by next year. The Flyers keep making the same mistakes year after year. Every summer they have to find a way to be cap complient and are handcuffed on what they can do. When they do get a little money, they overpay for aging talent or for average players because they are afraid someone else will sign them. In 2 years Berube will gone as coach because he failed to advance this team even tho upper management is inept. It is a cycle this franchise has repeated over and over again.
This will be unpopular, but I can see them being done. No vinny trade, no more signings.
They just don't HAVE to do something.
At this point, I expect Vinny to be the 2C, Schenn to be G's wing - nails
They shouldn't do anything because whatever they do will have little impact on the upcoming season. The spending has got to get under control and the mind set has to change.

If they found a way to move vinny without keeping 50% of his hit and wanted to sign someone like Mueller or Setoguchi for a year or two at less than 2M, I would be OK with that.
I would also be OK with doing nothing else, and have about 1M of LTIR money.

You don't think the Flyers beat the rangers if they have Mason for the whole series?
Then they get the Pens in round 2?
