Thanks again Bill for making this offseason a little less boring. Nothing brewing on the trade front? |

Ott- no
mueller-yes
Johnny turing 45 makes me feel old-since I am a couple months from being 45 and he seems ancient to me. I guess good thing I am not a professional athlete. |

maybe a little off topic, but in other leagues like the NBA it seems that teams can trade players with bad contracts, just to dump the contract. Is that something not permitted by the NHL or the CBA. Ive wondered why the flyers can't trade a pronger to a team at or near the cap floor and throw in a good pick or mid level prospect just to clear the cap room. |

I don't believe the CBA allows you to trade injured players. |

So, something has to give being $3MM over the cap. I know we don't have any compliance but outs left, but can they just waive Vinny? Or is there another type of buyout? I really don't think he has gotten a fair shake with his injury last year, but he certainly isn't built for speed and has lost half a step. It's hard to believe we are trying to sell him as a 2nd line center to other clubs and he is playing 4th line minutes for us. |

At first, I didn't like the idea of signing Ott. Then I had a mental image of the Flyers playing the Pens and Ott driving Downie and the rest of the Pens bat-crap crazy. It brought a smile to my face.
I also think Mueller could fit the bill for a scoring winger, if he stays healthy. |

The Flyers are over the cap because Pronger's contract counts against the cap until they can officially put him on LTIR. They can put Pronger on LTIR either right before the season starts (I believe) or they have to temporarily send a two-way contract player or 2 to the Phantoms, put Pronger on LTIR on the first day of the season, and then call those players back up. The only reason that Vinny was on the 4th line at the end of last season was because he didn't fit on the wing. He just could not adjust to playing anywhere but the middle. Vinny definitely still has the talent to play on the 2nd line (as evidenced by the 1st 22 games last season), but he has to make sure he is over his injury woes that made him a step or two slower, and he has to play Center. For a team that doesn't have 5 potential NHL-ready centers like the Flyers, he would be a better fit. |

I'm pretty sure you can, as long as the other team knows about the injury and is willing. |

But those players have to be on two way contracts or they have to clear waivers. I didn't know if we had enough of those counting against the cap. |

I'm not sure on the new CBA. Maybe I was thinking old CBA. |

You can't waive/reassign/demote an injured player... maybe that's what you're thinking of. |

Ooooh. Well maybe that could help sell the idea of ott. |

I'm ok with Ott as long as Rinaldo is off the team. Don't need both. |

good point. we need to have at least one guy making boneheaded moves. It keeps the opponents guessing. Love the way Rinaldo hits, but too many dumb moves. |

Peter Mueller seems like he may be worth the small risk. reminds me of Alexander Daigle with unmet expectations. |

Seems like every summer we sit around waiting for that one piece to fall into place. A few years ago it was waiting for Bryz or whatever goalie we were going to get. Two years ago it was Weber watch. Last summer we got Vinny. This year we are waiting for them to move Vinny to free up space for a mystery winger. I just don't think Steve Ott is putting us over the top. We really need to figure out a way to dismantle this overpaid defense. We are paying way too much for a bunch of second pairing defense men. Our youth d needs to develop as these contracts expire so maybe we can afford that elusive top d man. We have plenty of young offense that is closer than our d is. But we are handcuffed with this cap. |

There's nothing we can do about it. No one is ready to replace these guys if we move them anyway. Next year we'll be in better position to deal/buy out |
