Yeah.. Stephen Weiss as a replacement hasn't really worked out too well so far |

Thankfully he played that one extra game. Filppula almost had as many goals as Weiss did games played.
Hopefully he's healthy this coming year. He can still be a fine player for you guys. |

Weiss is done, he's horrible now. Booth-type contract. I feel bad for whatever players get stuck on his line when he does play. |

The reason so many thought it was over payment was his lackluster 17 points in his UFA season but he was dealing with a knee issue suffered during the lockout and also a banged up shoulder later in the season which definitely affected his production. I didn't want to see him leave Detroit but it was probably best for him to gain more ice time. Fil plays a very good 2 way game and the only thing that ever drives me crazy is how little he shoots the puck. |

No, just looking at his numbers. I know he's bed banged up these past 2 years, but they're basically at the level of goons who don't have the skill to be in the NHL. |

Weiss puts up 50+ points this year. Comparing him and Booth is laughable considering Booth never produced like Weiss. Comparing head injuries with groin/hernia injuries makes alot of sense too. |

Where did I compare their playing styles on injuries? Both are/were overpaid and struggled once they left Florida, and we're actually trending downward before then but playing in Florida hides you from league-wide attention. In some cases players can get away with struggling for long stretches or starting to become injury-prone. |

Weiss isn't bad, but it was foolish of Detroit to let Val leave for the sake of 250k. |

43 games in the last 2 years. Horrendous possession numbers and 8 points in that time. Huge gamble going into next season with him. 31 too.
With EDM's centre situation I'd probably still pass on him even with salary retention |

Mean that's obviously right, but at the time no one know HOW bad of a decision that was. |

Val is a stud who was buried in Detroit by their depth at center. I was a bit skeptical of the signing at first also, but he has made a believer out of me. I think what is sometimes overlooked is what he brings to the team in terms of two-way ethic - a mainstay in the Detroit system. Yzerman can preach it, but it really helps have an active player on the ice who is leading by example in that regard. Great blog Mike.

Filp had a good year but it wasn't crazy good. Towards the high end but definitely within what he's capable of. Be interesting to see if he goes up, stays the same, or goes back down to 40 point area again.
Weiss was a dud last year for sure. Tempting to right him off but he could have been just another victim of the injury plague the Wings had last year. |

One can say this is the best free agent signed in the yzerman era in tampa. Steve knew a lot about him from the redwings and acted very quickly to get him. |

I can see him stAying in that 50 to 60 point range if he plays with palat and Callahan again. |
