I'd do the trade all the live long day. Adding Ryan filled a void in our lineup. We have been seeking a dynamic winger like Ryan since the departure of Heatley. To me it was worth giving up decent pieces for a proven player. Especially where we were this time last summer. If we can sign him long term is a huge bonus. - Gord_Wilson_2.0
Would you rather have Bobby Ryan right now (10 months away from UFA) or Jacub Silverberg, Stefan Noesen, and Nick Ritchie.

Took me a while but I put it together ....
Best contract team:
*Dynasty (for 2+ years contracts)
*No Entry level deals
*Alittle room for calls up in case of injury (optional)
Frans Nielsen (2.75) John Tavares (5.5) Kyle Okposo (2.8)
Max Pacioretty (4.5) Kyle Turris (3.5) Wayne Simmonds (3.975)
Chris Kunitz (3.85) David Backes (4.5) TJ Oshie (4.175)
Nick Bonino (1.9) Zack Smith (1.88) Sean Couturier (1.75)
Victor Hedman (4.0) Erik Johnson (3.75)
Mark Giodanio (4.02) Kevin Shattenkirk (4.25)
Jared Cowen (3.1) Nick Holden (1.65)
Jonathon Quick (5.8)
Frederik Andersen (1.15)
JVR good contract --- patch has more goals. Plus chemistry of some players is a big thing |

I'm actually surprised that the question is phrased as if what was given up has somehow appreciated in value since the trade. Silfverberg had a complete plateau of a year - which is really not good, given that he was clearly the centrepiece return - Noesen basically didn't play, and Ritchie could very well amount to little more than a 3rd line crash winger. You really wouldn't prefer to have a player of Ryan's quality? The only knock on him is that he hasn't re-signed yet, but if I was running the team I'd be working like anything to get that deal done before training camp. |

Really not fair to look at from that context. You have to look at when the deal was made. Two years left on Ryan's deal and Ottawa just came off a pretty good season. The glaring hole in the line up was a legitimate top line winger. Ryan is that. If Ryan walks or gets dealt again, it would suck, but in my opinion, worth the risk. People really have to take off the Sens prospect goggles assuming all our prospects become prime time players. It just doesn't happen. In any organization. Ryan should get resigned. It's just whether or not Ryan actually wants to play here. It's hard to get a Bobby Ryan type player. It's not hard to get middle of the pack prospects. |

I think the only way some people will be satisfied with the deal is if it becomes like a Turris/Runblad deal. We get the legitimate top 6 forward, while they get a player struggling to make the lineup who they quickly part ways with. That doesn't happen usually. You have to give to get in trading. Ottawa did a great job. I was more impressed they didn't have to give up (according to rumours) Cowen or Zibanejad in the deal. The trade that happened should be forgotten and the focus should be on getting Bobby Ryan signed. Big piece of the puzzle for this team going forward. |

People look at deals short term and declare a winner or years later they take the deal out of context and reverse the findings. For example, Nieuwendyk for a great prospect Iginla. Dallas became very good Stanley Cup team. Iginla had HOF career. Both sides won. I would not have done the deal. But, lots of people would say Stanley Cup is hardest trophy in major sports to win, you do what you have to to win. Rangers gave up great talent in Kovalev, same story.
