Well, I am unhappy. Obviously doesn't cripple the organisation, but as you say, head-scratching $$$. |

With other areas that still need improving(defense mainly) and a self imposed cap I'm starting to wonder if the Sens have much intention to sign Bobby Ryan to the type of offer he'd field in free agency. |

Good deal for Ottawa - budget teams make the playoffs with awesome goaltending and we have maybe one of the best 1-2 punches in the league - if you don't have an elite goalie better to have 2 very solid ones.
and in signing, Andy has basically said he is a team player first because he knows there is an excellent chance he loses the starters job to Lehner - so another good day for Ottawa. Andy is great and was the best goalie in the NHL during the lockout - I;m excited, best goalie Ottawa has ever had |

I see Methot signing, (eventually), but what about Ryan?
Will Melnyk open his checkbook? - puckhead17
Murray signed Heatley to his extention on the afternoon of Game 1 season opener- still lot's of time. Ryan is going to sign, no need to sweat it out.
Lot's of positives in Ottawa - extending all the vets is great news for this team. Momentum is building, the big contract will take the longest.
Ryan 5yrs - $7 million |

I like Anderson, I think he's a been a bit of an overacheiver at times although slightly underrated, but $12.6 million over 3 years seems a bit of an over payment for a guy coming off a 3.00 GAA and .911 SV% season. |

Actually not at all, remember the new collective player agreement and the new cap ceiling? Those impact all new salaries, meaning all new salaries are higher than before.

I thought Melnyk unloaded Spezza to get payroll down, signing Ryan & a few others brings payroll back up over his self imposed budget.
I do hope Ryan stays, & I like the job Murray is doing, but it seems Melnyk wants the payroll down. |

No way ryan signs a 5 year contract at less money then he would probably get as a UFA. |

New cap ceiling doesn't mean teams should go out and over pay players. Regardless, I'll agree to disagree, Anderson is a good goalie, but not worth over $4 million per season. I don't think it's an unreasonable contract though. |

We overpaid on per year by about 750k,but we did save on term.We get a solid veteran goalie who will eventually lose his job to lehner .But at for at least 2 of the 4 years remaining iam sure there will be at least a competition between the two players |

Jesus Christ, will you shut the (frank) up?
You are totally getting Bobby Ryan on the flyers next year. 100%
There, happy? Now go away with your constant, unrelenting, thinly veiled hints, as if you can somehow convince Bobby Ryan not to sign in Ottawa through the hockeybuzz forums.

there's more at play then money, Ryan likes Ottawa, generally players like to sign contracts before UFA because if they do get injured or have a bad season it hurts their value and he has said he wants to be part of the team - and he's a good player but is he worth $8.5 million? |

You're right. I wouldn't sign him for more than 5 yrs, so it would have to be more like $8.5M. Any more than that, and I'd look at trading him.
I like Andy and glad he extended, but the money is more than he's worth IMO. Even without a NMC, he might be hard to trade if his Sv% falls off a cliff. Lehner's still got some mental work to do, but I can see him being ready in a year if he gets 50% starts. |

He's not worth 8.5 that's why I think Ottawa should trade him. I like Ryan but I don't think he should be your highest paid player. |

Anaheim would have had the same problem extending him, (if he was still a Duck)? |

Aside from the MacArthur/Lehner/Legwand signings I am scratching my head.
Why do we need so many average players?
Maybe I am ignorant to the "master plan"??
I don't see Phillips/Anderson/Michalek being revelations this year
(and all may just take a step back)
This hockey team is the equivalent of having 5 sh!tty cars in the driveway instead of 2 nice ones -- drives me nuts!
Sorry, guys but I needed to vent... |

Anderson will start 70+ games this season
because as Maclean loves to (incorrectly) remind us: Craig has a history of playing 70+ games per season (he's accomplished this one time in a decade) |

Great signing.
I'd much rather see this than scrounging in the bargain bin next summer for a veteran backup.
This move also aids the Ryan negotiations IMO. He sees a commitment to our *new* core and leaders, something I hope he wants to be a part of.

he had a down year, playing behind arguably one of the worst D groups in the league. the guy has gotten serious vezina consideration in 2 of the last 5 years. In 3 years in ottawa, he's won nearly 100 games (reg season + playoffs), has an avg GAA under 2.5, and an avg sv% at around .925.
considering this deal will make him the 18th or 19th highest paid goalie in the league, it's a deal. i don't think you can name 18 or 19 better goalies. |

how many players are actually available in UFA that aren't duds - Brad Richards, that guy Toronto signed last year for way to much money, - you don't see elite players hit FA. They know they are getting paid so why risk going to FA, it's the players who's teams don't want them because they overvalue themselves that go to FA - Pouliot etc.
the real players get signed, they don't go to FA |
