Lazar will be a good player one day. I think he can top out as a very good 2nd liner. And, I think that'll happen with certainty.
Yakupov however has the ability to be a excellent 1st line player but it's still a question mark and he can turn into a 2nd line player. But, Yak would never be a 3rd or 4th liner. So you have weigh the best case and worse case scenarios of both players.
I think when you think about it, Yak is the much better prospect and he is worth a heck of a lot more than just Lazar.
I'd say if there was a deal that it would be something like...
To Ottawa:
- YAK
To Edmonton
- Lazar
- Classen
- Methot
- Dal 2nd 2015 - riceroni

Thank god football is back (GO INDY). These trade proposals have gotten out of hand this off-season.
Sens trade Methot with no D coming back we easily lead the league in Goals Against.
FACT
but we then draft McDavid. Bold strategy Cotton

I believe Methot will be traded. But, it makes no sense to me unless there is another Dman on the horizon. I don't know the ideal fit as a partner for Karlsson. Perhaps none really exists due to the uniqueness of his game.
Kuba has been the best so far. Steady, okay skater, good size, primary focus on defensive zone coverage. Edler looked good at the Olympics with Karlsson. Right now the left handed shots are Methot, Cowen and Wiercioche. |

edler only played 1 game with karlsson in the olympics....and the team lost and was shutout. the rest of the tournament, karlsson played with OEL |

I think you have it backwards. OEL is the one who claimed the Swedish coach did not like him. He got very little ice time as the Swedes went deeper into the medal round.

his ice time might have gone down a bit, but he was karlsson's partner (for most shifts) for all but the gold medal game......i remember them commenting on it repeatedly during the game. |

No, don't think so. Karlsson played monster minutes. Except for the first game when Edler was not dressed OEL got limited time on ice.

well i guess karlsson had 2 partners, cuz OEL was absolutely playing with EK. he was the 2nd leading scorer among their D corps
either way.......edler is a good player, would probably look good with karlsson, but probably not worth what vancouver would want for him. |

Give me a trade proposal from the Rags in which you give up a top 4 D,blue chip prospect, pick, and prospect for ONLY Yak.
If you were to add a bit maybe it gets discussed but lets be real here, that deal is horrendous for the Sens. - SENS 613
Staal (extended) + Miller + 1st would be what Edmonton would want but there's no reason for the Rangers to do that atm. |

staal has been nothing more than an avg 2nd pairing player for about 3 years, miller is a good prospect, hasn't shown much in the NHL, and you don't have a 1st
you say that ottawa has to pay out the ass to get yakupov and mock ottawa fans in EK's thread, yet you suggest the rangers only need to offer probably their 4th best d-man, decent but not top prospect, and a pick you don't have. |

Staal is our best defenseman after McDonagh. Just because he plays on our 2nd pair (only because McDonagh is just that good and they're both left-handed) doesn't mean he's a "2nd pairing defenseman". He could play on the 1st line on over 20 teams in the league. There's a reason AV doesn't match defensive pairings...Staal saw more time against Crosby and Giroux and Pacioretty and Kopitar than McDonagh or Girardi I believe.
Miller is likely our top prospect. Our prospect pool is that thin. You could argue that Duclair or Buchnevich have (a lot) more upside than Miller though. Skjei is also projected to be a top-pairing defenseman.
You are right about our 1st. I guess my proposal was in case we hypothetically did. |

you could argue that boyle might be there too. fact is, staal is at best their 4th best dman......hell, if stralman was still there, staal would probably be 5th.
he used to be a top pairing calibre guy, but has been average at best the last 3 years. injuries likely play a role in that, but there is no doubt his game has taken serious steps back |

You literally have no idea what you're talking about
He's battled injuries the 2 seasons prior to the most recent one, but he's been back to the old Staal since January and played the best hockey of his entire career heading into and throughout the playoffs.
Although thanks I think? If Staal is our 4th or 5th best defenseman that means we have 5 top pairing defenseman.
Staal will get extended for more money than Girardi just got for a reason. |

hahaha well making our D worse was kinda my master plan in thinking it would give us a better shot at McDavid or Eichel...
So if the trade was...
To EDM
- Lazar, Dal 2nd, Methot (signing him to a 5+ year deal is actually a problem) and Classen (guy who's buried in the system)
To Ott
- Yakupuv
+++ Ottawa 1st (1st or 2nd overall) instead of 10th overall = McDavid... |

You could have McDavid, Eichel, Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan, and Kessel making up your top 9 and you still won't score against a team that has Marc Staal as their 5th best defender. |

well, conditioning camp starts Friday for the Peewee RepB team my boy is trying out for.... he's a returning major player (we don't separate minor/major) so he should be good to make the team - without getting ahead of myself......
We lost yet another player to a bad AA team, but kids/parents want to 'play at the highest level possible' so I guess good for them. Good player on a bad AA team, or really good player on a RepB team that has a chance to win it all ...... I guess it all boils down to perspective.
A second problem is the boy's dad will not be the coach of the RepB team - probably the best coach our boys would have had ....... Double wammy.....
alas, one player does not a team make, so we should still be a strong team....
loving that hockey season has started for some of us

classic debate - both are about the same size and are NHL wingers - one has all the skill and one has all the heart. Yak will have better stats long term, but Lazar is one of those players who winning teams always seem to have on their roster.
I'm more for heart then skill, and we already have enough small forwards with skill, but Yakupov completely changes your PP and overall team speed. - tuna99
I disagree with this. I think Lazar is going to be a very consistent point producer, and that the number he puts out there will surprise a lot of people. Yakupov has the skill, but so did Nikita Filatov. |

NO. He is DEFINITELY NOT.
Staal is absolutely the 2nd best d-man in NY. |
