Doesn't have to be at the same time. In fact I don't know why it would be.

I don't care if he sits guys or not, but Berube can't preach accountability without holding everyone to the same standard. That can breed all sorts of discontent from certain players. Besides, if a player doesn't realize they are accountable for his play then he is a dingus.

- NickTheKid87

Of course everyone has to be held to different standards. If Zac Rinaldo takes 2 minors and is a -1 in a game, everyone will want him to sit. If Claude Giroux takes 3 minors and is a -2, no one will be calling for him to be pulled out of the lineup. Star players will be treated differently than others because they are star players, and that's nothing new for any team in pro sports.

I know that but it wasn't like Lecavalier or Grossmann had one bad game... We're talking about stretches of poor play. Same goes for Rinaldo.

Nobody can say that certain hockey players don't get 2nd and 3rd chances.

So again, what games are we sacrificing to make these unmakeable roster moves to teach them a lesson bu giving them a time out?

I'm expecting Winnipeg to give him one so that he and Buff can share information on the best donut shops in town.

Are you really sacrificing a game by benching a mediocre Vinny Lecavalier?

Edit: Maybe you even win a game because him or others aren't in the lineup.

1. Scott Laughton
This is his third training camp where he will start with the prospects and get a shot to make the NHL roster. It’s time for the 20-year-old center to make a move. Really, it’s now or never for Laughton, especially with all the uncertainty surrounding Vinny Lecavalier’s viability at center or whether Brayden Schenn takes that job. Laughton needs to make a strong case for himself.

I think Berube gave Vinny lee-way because he was being misused. That is my own personal opinion. He did put Vinny on the 4th line for a long stretch.

Grossmann is professional defenseman. Yes he has his warts but overall he was a better option than the other players below him. Gus and Gill were not NHL regulars last season. Gus had some of the skills but was not consistent. Gill is not an NHL player anymore.

So, I am not sure Berube had all that many obvious replacements. He reassigned playing time and moved players throughout the line up. I believe this year he will have some options in terms of benching players. If he decides to go that route.

If the replacement is a below-average Kris Newbury (top AL center), then yes. But the thing was, the OP wanted to bench Grossmann, Vinny, and Meszaros during the same January stretch.

He's an old 20. He might as well be 40. He was drafted in 2012. That's 3 iPhones ago. Might as well just take him out back and put him down.

I would bench them (assuming they're struggling) on different days. Benching a bunch of players at the same time is asinine.

Well, that's what was proposed, that you needed to bench Vinny and Grossman for January. But really, there's no way I'd bench Vinny for Kris Newbury. Instead, I'd move him to a RW spot or drop him down in the lineup, the latter of which was done by Berube as a last resort.

There is a difference between benching a guy for doing stupid stuff, IE Hartnell, and saying benching a guy for having a bad stretch of games. IE Grossmann.

Accountability is a good thing, but there are different levels of accountability. A guy in a slump is a hell of a lot different than a guy with no discipline. I think Hartnell was finally held accountable by being dealt. Should he have been benched during the season, maybe, but for who? Same goes for Grossmann. At least in Grossmanns case he was trying to do the right thing on the ice. I think Hartnell thought he could do whatever he wanted because of who he was.

I just read that. Now or never for a kid who is just now eligible to play in the AHL? He sure does have a gift for hyperbole. I notice they have no space for comments lol.

I agree. I think Grossmann was more a product of how he was used than his actual skill level. Hartnell should have been bench if they really were shooting for accountability. Lecavalier should have been scratched a game or two for poor play. I just don't think it sends a good message when Rinaldo screws up and is benched but not Hartnell or Grossmann doesn't even see a reduction of minutes during a cold streak.
