Agreed! Misuse of players and plain stubbornness of the coach, seen it all last year with Yak and starting all over again with others.

That improved goaltending oilers fans kept talking about looked great
Don't mind the fact I said scrivens will have a dubnyk like year and I was immediately called an idiot by the meatheads here

- Bigern4MVP

Because you are for being an idiotic troll.
I accepted a long time ago I was a meathead. Stop the denial.

I'm not neccasarily admitting anything. As I said, we probably finish relative to last year if we play 82 games. Take away the 'head start' we had with the kids in okc as well and it may have been worse.

48 games is an asterisk. That's all I'm willing to admit.

And training camp gives everyone a chance to get ready. Not just the oilers. It's not like somehow we should be better in relation to other teams cause we had a training camp. The only edge that might be true was the shortened season. Not the other way around

- hugefemale dog77

I don't think training camp was used properly to ensure our starting roster was fully ready. But that's just me.

Oilers should drop the hammer immediatley and go after Dan Bylsma because he's still unemployed! I'm sure coaching isn't the only problem but I never got a good vibe from Eakins right from the day he was hired. It's only one game but it's time to go after a legit NHL coach before the season goes down the toilet!
- NewfieStud

I would be on board with Bylsma

"Yeah, Moe, that team sure sucked last night. They just plain sucked. I've seen teams suck before but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked."

Honestly though, other than those 2 quick goals I thought they played really well for the first 40 minutes..it's like they just had to settle down and play...tied it back up and I felt they were gonna win it in the third..Scrivens let in a couple of goals I thought he should have had but he also made some keys saves as well..I don't know..that was a game they they should have won, Flames always play hard against the Oil, still a game that they should have had..

You can't blame that on Scrivens like you are for that game, he was certainly outplayed on the other end but he wasn't as bad as your suggesting. The Oilers did exactly what were getting used to. The kids have a lot of talent and at times were flying out there, but as long as you're the other team and you can hold them off in your own zone you just have to wait for those 3,4, or 5 times they have an absolute breakdown, and gift wrap the puck for you in front of their own net. Ka-ching, thank you very much!

The first goal Scrivens went out to try and play the puck as the other 5 on the ice wearing blue were left checking their jock straps, and as opposed to Ty Conklin, he at least had enough sense to realize he was in trouble and rightly got back into his net where he belongs, probably thinking to himself "didn't we dress some defence tonight?" When everyone else wearing blue finally got in the zone there were 10 eyes focused squarely on that black rubber puck and no one picked up a man like they should. Taylor Hall did about 3 pivots and then plunked himself in the worst possible spot not anywhere close enough to the shooter to be effective for a block but perfect to block the view of everyone behind him (aka Scrivens). That puck went by Scrivens and he never had a chance, you can tell that he never saw the puck first nor last before it was in the back of the net. The Oilers (and I hate to point out these breakdowns were usually the #1 line) were caught puck chasing and no one was in position and gave the flames the opening they needed.

2nd goal Scrivens just helped the puck over to Fayne who was also under pressure and he coughed it up to the Flame coming around the net, unimpeded (who's man is that?), who promptly put it out to the slot to Hudler standing there all by himself ("WHO THE F#@$!'s MAN IS THAT!") where there was no Orange and blue and good luck stopping a shot from there when the shooter has no pressure. Might as well be a free kick in soccer in front of a 30 foot net!

3rd goal was all about speed and spectators, Maison Raymond is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL period, just ask Mr. Ference who was watching him skate away from him with the puck starting from the flames blueline! (Not to point out but SC#1 once again dropped the ball in the O-zone, Ebs watched a fairly weak pass go by him to set this up.) But you have Raymond coming in at full speed, again with no one between him and Scrivens, and then he lets a clapper go from just outside the hashmarks/faceoff circle on the left side, which crosses from left to right to the open net on that side. There is zero time to react as a goalie and a player coming in with speed like that is changing the angles way too fast for everything to be covered, there will be open net and if the shooter can put the puck there the goalie has zero time to react to it.

...and that was the game, the other two goals were just absolute breakdowns because by then the Oilers were in full panic mode. But just as a note, for the hatrick goal, Schultz was just coasting along with Raymond, with his stick in his waist, as he walked into the slot and simply deposited the puck in the net. He didn't even give Raymond a shove let alone take his stick out of play, or I don't know get between him and you're own net!

So with this terrible support it wouldn't matter who you had in net, simple as that. Patrick Roy would have thrown his hands up in the air and left the building likely long before the third goal because he at least expects to be able to read the numbers on his Defencemens backs every now and then.

Bench the first line and you might have had a chance last night, because no matter how many shots they get going the other way, if you can't play in your own zone, you'll get to watch 5 goals or more go past your own goalie no matter what name is on the back of his jersey.

WTF Defense - one undrafted, two from fifth round, one from eighth, two from second round are all better than the two first rounders in press box.

why? cause dumb ass coach himself was drafted in tenth round

and cause Eakins believes it takes 20 years of pro hockey to play 120 nhl games (see his bio)

From the highlights, it looked like Scrivens tried to do too much with the puck and may have been a bit jittery.

FWIW, a lot of teams really suck on their opening night. Hell, San Jose pumped LA 4-0. I think we will see a stronger team tomorrow night against Vancouver.

Edit: coaches should always roll with the hot goalie.

"The Oilers controlled possession during the first two periods, outshooting the Flames 25-11 through 40 minutes. Congratulations, Corsi dorks, we won a completely meaningless statistical battle! The majority of those shots came from outside the faceoff dots or the point, without any traffic in net to create a deflection, screen, or rebound opportunity."

Unbelievable.

Before the game I heard that Calgary benched their highest paid defenceman (Wideman) just to make things easier for the Oil.

With the talent the oil possess and the amount of time this core has been together there should be no excuses anymore.

Personal changes are needed on the ice and in management. This is painfully obvious. To lose against a sad sack team like the Flames (that are obviously going for a high draft pick) is inexcusable.

Dont agree with your assessment of the D. Ference was pretty poopty. complete opposite opinion of yours. Nikitin was bad. Petry was best oilers D. Followed by hunt fayne schultz.
So frustrating to see the oil dominate 50 min of play only to give up 5 goals on grade A chances for 10 minutes.. However the Oilers D didnt help scrivens AT ALL on the first two goals. However he wasnt strong no matter which way you look at it.
