1 game against a non-playoff team! EVERYTHING to worry about! Shots don't count on the score board, goals do. They had a lot of shots, mostly low percentage shots, but the breakdowns were enormous. Only takes 5 of those for the score to be 5-whatever!.

If the Oilers want any chance of getting anywhere close to the playoffs, they simply can't afford to drop a game against a non-playoff team and that includes game 1. They need to be ahead and they need to do it now. If you can't win a game that you should have won, you have no chance when you go down into California.

I have great concerns that this was our shortest season yet!

Before the game I heard that Calgary benched their highest paid defenceman (Wideman) just to make things easier for the Oil.

With the talent the oil possess and the amount of time this core has been together there should be no excuses anymore.

Personal changes are needed on the ice and in management. This is painfully obvious. To lose against a sad sack team like the Flames (that are obviously going for a high draft pick) is inexcusable.

Coaching was a HUGE problem in this game. When Hunt is the second highest dman for TOI, there is a problem. Petry and Ference playing the least. Nail getting less time than Pouliot. I will repeat that... Pouliot. Eakins still won't give up that grudge.

Lets put it this way. Calgary with 1 PPG and both of EDM's were. Petry has a +/- of 0 but Fayne, who played more was -3.

The Oil out shot them with calgary getting more than half their shots in the third period. We had less give aways and more take aways. Our FO wins were almost twice theirs. We had 1/3 of the blocked shots because the d we had out were 1/3 as good as normal NHL dmen. We let Petry and Ference ride the bench and Ference still managed to get 1/3 of our total blocked shots himself. Petry had 5 of our 18 hits (highest on the team)

Yes Scrivens looked silly out there are some points but you can't fault him on goals like the last one. The Oilers were everywhere and he made about 30 saves before letting that one in. Only so much you can expect from him. Part of this is MacT. Nikinin and Fayne were not the answers to our problem. Hunt isn't even good enough for the Barons. Plus we should have had addressed our center issue.

Still Eakins had to go. We all knew it and hoped we were wrong but you can hang this on him. We had Calgary until the third period and yes I believe playing the right players could very well have made all the difference.

Dont agree with your assessment of the D. Ference was pretty poopty. complete opposite opinion of yours. Nikitin was bad. Petry was best oilers D. Followed by hunt fayne schultz.
So frustrating to see the oil dominate 50 min of play only to give up 5 goals on grade A chances for 10 minutes.. However the Oilers D didnt help scrivens AT ALL on the first two goals. However he wasnt strong no matter which way you look at it.

Hunt had a decent game but if you take a look at the D pairings it's pretty obvious why his minutes were high! As for Petry & Ference, first off this was Petry's 1st game, no preseason, etc. Any coach would ease a player back in when he hasn't played any. As for the 2 of them having the least TOI, that is true but they had more shifts then Fayne & Nikitin. TOI isn't an exact translation to how much TOI the coach wants the players to get but shifts do. Players can get stuck on the ice longer than a coach would want, icing, pressure in you zone, etc.

As for Yak, Pouliot and Eakins hate for Yak, give your head a shake and take a pill!

Hall, RNH and Eberle were -2. Gordon, Hendricks and Joennsu were -1. So are you saying we should be playing our 4th line more too!

I will agree you can't put total blame on Scrivens for the 5 goals. I do think he looked shaky and had a hard time handling the puck which resulted in him being out a position some and not tracking the puck as good as he could of for a couple of the goals. But it really cam down to some bad coverage on our part. There is no reason to have 3-4 guys chasing after the one guy with the puck while all the other players are wide open, just stupid! and that has nothing to do with the coach, that's all on the players.

We dominated more of the game than Calgary. During that time we really looked like a different team, we were aggressive, went to the net, heck we had 42 shots on goal, 42! Last year we struggled to get over 20 each game. I think this a translation to the team following what the coaching staff wants to see. Unfortunately we had some brain farts and poor coverage which lead to the final score. I think if we didn't break down coverage wise at worst we would have lost 3-2. Also you have to give credit to Ramo who played a good game!

People have to remember also we had 6 new faces in the lineup plus 3 guys who only had 40 or so games with the team last year. We can't expect instant team chemisty, it will take a tiny bit of time.

Positives: Actually played aggressively, dominated around 40mins, 42 shots on goal, Dominate in Face-offs (was very surprised for RNH and Drasitil), I thought the forward line combo's worked good together offensively, Yak had a good game, Drasitil had a good game for a rookie.

Negatives: Brain farts, fell into the old problem from last year of poor coverage in the d-zone. The one thing I would put on the coach, starting Scrivens. We should of went with the hot guy and Fasth was that guy going into the 1st game.

I can only imagine you are just trying to get some convo going.the oilers team defense was pathetic .they were soft everywhere on the ice standing straight up most of the time watch Calgary pass it around.Nikitin was brutal for sure, but I can't say anyone was more then decent at best .their offense gives you much to he excited about, but if they don't start tightening up in their own zone this will be another long season.Scrivens was fighting the puck , but the zone coverage was worse then his puck handling skill last night.just brutal.
