Met Ox twice. He was one of the nicest human beings I ever met. He was a great heel in the ring -- had that LOOK, size and booming voice -- but wouldn't harm a fly in real life.
True story about Ox, back during his active days, wrestlers tried to keep kayfabe and stay in character in public (especially when they were as instantly recognizable as he was). Baker struggled with that, especially around kids. - bmeltzer
That's awesome Bill. I share your enthusiasm for wrestling. IIRC didn't Baker kill a wrestler in the early 70's with a heart punch? |

Haha...I had no idea what his real name is. Hell, I thought Hulk Hogan's real last name was Hogan until he started doing more movies - Jsaquella

No idea. I haven't watched wrestling in years. I used to be a fairly regular watcher, I probably stopped watching around when I got married. |

Does he still do the Lightning "fire up the crowd" videos? - Jsaquella
I've seen him do that before. Not sure if he still lives in Tampa. His ex-wife took him to the cleaners. |

The Sheik is stellar. I was at an expo about 5 years ago, where the Ultimate Warrior attacked him. Not sure if it was scripted or not.
The Iron Sheik actually was on the 1972 Iranian Olympic team. |

I watched it regularly in middle school. I would tape it if I couldn't watch it that night. My friend and I accidently taped over his little brother's Bar Mitzvah video. I'll never forget sitting down with his family to watch his brother's Haftorah only to press play and see X-Pac delivering a Bronco Buster. |

At least it was wrestling and not the other tape X-Pac made with Chyna...although in that tape she made him a man, so it's kind of like a Bar Mitzvah |

Yes, Ray Gunkel died after a match with Baker. Baker was very distraught about it, of course, but the promoters used the tragedy to build up his reputation as a ruthless villain with a potentially lethal finishing move.

Geez. Promoters actually used a death to build his character... Wow. That's hard to imagine. |

Yes... legitimately Iranian and legitimately a former Olympian as well as a Pan-Am games gold medalist (after moving to the USA) as an amateur wrestler.
Drugs of all sorts -- crack, painkillers, etc -- and alcohol abuse are what make him act so crazed and loony. This documentary was filmed when he was sober, and it's a whole different person. BTW, funny how he still protects kayfabe since almost no one else does anymore.

For those of you who watched the Super Mario Bros. Show (hosted by Cpt. Lou Albano), did you ever think (as a kid) that the cartoon Zelda was hot? I was into her back then. |
