IMO, duration of his cap-hit on the books is more of a nuisance than the actual cap-hit itself. Even if you just buy out the last year of his deal, you'd have to live with an additional year of him being on the books. I'd prefer to completely wash my hands of his and VL's contracts, ASAP.

I would still give Vinny a shot. At least he has shown he can put up some offensive numbers. At least he can shoot the puck!
With RJ they should wash their hands immediately with ammonia!

there is no doubt Umberger 's contract is awful and the trade is awful but I can't help but think we would have been doing the same complaining in 3 yrs about Hartnell's deal and having to deal with it then with the raises other guys are getting may actually be worse.

You absolutely can blame him, to some extent. He's been dealt a poor hand, but he's not playing it especially well.

He has juggled lines, but he's refused to split his pairs up. Giroux has steadfastly remained with Voracek, Couturier with Read and Umberger with Lecavalier, when the latter has played.

He's got a poorly performing playmaker type on a 4th line with an energy player and a grinder. He's got two under performing veterans dragging down just about everyone who joins them. He should look at making real changes, not shuffling Schenn & Simmonds in the top 6 and Akeson and VandeVelde in the bottom 6.

- Jsaquella

Yes but under no circumstances should Voracek and G be split up. It is the one thing that is going for us, no need to mess with it. Flyers need to get Vinny going again, he got off to a good start before the injury but like last season after he returned from injury he struggled. Umberger at this point may have to be a 4.6 mill 4th line player when Raffl Returns.

Could probably still suit up and give us a better 2nd line.

I agree. I think Clarke was the best player this organization has ever had in the non goalie category overall but there is no question Lindros was the most talented in my opinion. He had a mix of skill and size. He could go through you or around you. I will never forget the first game I saw live (I split season tickets back then) and just was blown away

Do you think a team would take Umberger at $2.3m over 2 years

That's where I am... don't particularly care for Umberger, but still like the trade from a long-range cap perspective.

16 games is a small sample size, Umberger absolutely will bounce back to form. He's a proven veteran. Zero chance he's cooked.

Maybe... out of all the likely outcomes, that is the one that probably hurts the least all around.

from a cap perspective, i'm good with this. hartnell's gone. i don't care what he's doing in columbus. and all of his scoring isn't helping them win anyway. hartnell here does not make the flyers a contender. it just gives them some additional scoring. he's streaky, just like many others, and he'll go cold at some point this year. and still take penalties and fall down all the time etc.

my concern is with umberger. he's gotten off to a terrible start. i don't have a ton of faith he'll snap out of it, given his poor season last year, but it's not impossible. it's just painful to watch him. i'd put him on the 4th line and move up PEB. get him away from vinny, and limit his ES minutes.

I think it's a pretty even trade. Shelby Miller is no future scrub, that's for sure.

Their pitching is gonna be nasty for a long time now between Teheran, Miller, and Kimbrel on the back end. Yowza.

EDIT: I said it then and I say it now.. If we were moving him (Hartnell) I wanted a pick ONLY.

Then with the cap space you got from him, sign a guy like Mason Raymond

That is always the argument.. I think the point was that we could have traded him for someone other than Umberger.

Hartnell's contract wasn't very friendly in terms of length. In order of the Flyers to rid themselves of it they had to give up production now, for a cooked player with a slightly worse contract albeit shorter in term. The Flyers will eat poop until Umberger's contract is up. No way around it.

Also true.

I think it's safe to assume the Flyers explored all options though. Kicked the tires with other teams and looked for "better" deals.

I do think, simply on an on paper basis, Hartnell could have reeled in a pick at least along with an umberger caliber player. [Edit: but again, maybe the flyers thought that too, but unfortunately this was the best deal on the table] It sucks, but that's the way it went down. female doging will change nothing, whether you're "defending" it or not.
