How can one honestly ask if the players are tanking? For what? A guy that will come in and take one of their jobs? And it's not like the Leafs traded away top players.
This "tanking on purpose" theory has just got to stop. - grand-magus
Agreed, Tanking starts at the management level. Players risk too much by ruining their own futures on the chance they may get to play with a superstar. Not really a motivation with guys who have an average professional career of 5.5 years.
So once we see Management making stupid moves like playing Phaneuf or not trading anyone or waiving insignifi..... WAIT A SEC........... |

I think Goodwin's injury to snaps played ratio might actually be record breaking.
He's like Roscoe Parrish, except Parrish made plays |

Yeah, tanking is a management thing not so much a player thing. If a roster is just devoid of talent it's not really their fault if it tanks.
At the same time the Leafs and tanking are hard to put together. They will find a way to stabilize and not fall nearly that far. Even last year's dive couldn't get them further down than 8. Enough skill in spots on the roster to keep them fairly mediocre. |

I guess the only thing better than a Sabres win is a Leafs loss. 9-2 ouch. I think the "tanking" Pachla is talking about is just a little Shadenfreude were all feeling after such a rough season.
I wouldn't really have much faith in Shanahan if I were a Leaf fan though. The corporate owners of the Leafs don't seem to be willing to make the risky changes that will build a contender, such as axing Nonis and Carlyle then moving out some pieces like Kadri and Phanuef. So you're stuck with a coach with an ineffective system and a GM married to the team he's put together.
It's not too late for the Leafs to make some big changes if they're smart. Nonis could save himself if he replaces Carlyle with Bylsma and makes some moves.... |

As of now, they hope to have the game Sunday, but I work with the brother of someone on the equipment staff, and he said that Monday is a scenario they are considering. Ultimately, the league makes the final call. |

"This is the second loss in a row for Toronto and the second game in a row their fans displayed their anger and disgust by throwing their Leafs' regalia on the ice, although this time a Leafs' sweater was thrown on the ice during live play. Three nights prior, the Buffalo Sabres had pounded the Leafs 6-2 and frustrated Toronto hockey fans littered the First Niagara Center ice with a jersey and some scarves."
I'm really tired of those guys coming over the border and leaving their clothes behind.
Ok, needed to get that one out of the way. |

My mistake then. Although I think a key difference is that on the Sabres, management purposefully did not acquire the players, tools, etc needed to win games
The Leafs tried to ice a winning team but still fail. (And not as consistently as the Sabres)
The most frustrating thing out of all this is that Leafs will finish 9th and get nowhere and the cycle will continue and teams that don't try to ice a competitive roster (even if your players try their hearts out and are competitive), will be rewarded. - twiztedmike
I agree, and that was what the Sabres did for a generation while teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago loaded up during the down years and parlayed that into success. It's a recipe for disappointment - and no one tells Toews and co they should learn to win with honor (I left Crosby out of that clause on purpose). |
