Here is the problem though. It shouldn’t matter if Sidney Crosby, Jaromir Jagr, or Zach Sill is on the other end of a hit like that. It should be punished all the same, injury or not. Star power and injury all too often have a hand in the Department of Player Safety’s random justice system.
I completely agree with this. The NHL puts way too much emphasis on whether the 'victim' is injured or not.
A head-shot is a head-shot. The act should be punished. It shouldn't matter whether Player A happens to be more prone to bad concussions than Player B. Just because a guy was lucky not to be badly injured the offender gets off easy. That makes no sense to me.
Similarly, a head-shot is a head-shot. It shouldn't matter if it was Martin St.Louis hitting Patrik Kaleta or if it was John Scott hitting Sidney Crosby. The same illegal act should be punished in the same manner.
The only difference would be to tack on additional punishment for a repeat offender.
Unfortunately, the NHL does not take this consistent approach and players act accordingly. |

That's some biased hate right there. It was a late hit and came high. Can't believe you're painting Jagr as the villain and promoting frontier justice. I thought you guys liked skill and clean play as opposed to settling things the refs won't. - jmatchett383
Wow, you put so many words in my mouth that I'm choking.
All I said was that Jagr deserved a penalty for the trip and spear on Bortuzzo previous to the hit. Had he gone to the box, the hit never happens because he wouldn't have been on the ice. Not promoting frontier justice at all. |

Couldn't agree more. If the isles deserved to have their play on malkin looked at than this should be too. he could have made that hit into the chest/ hip area. hit was late and away from play. didnt see the game last night so just saw the replays, but any pens fan that wants to complain about hits to their players should stand up and say "BAD BORTZ! BAD!" |

While I agree 100%, what if it's Zdeno Chara making a "head" shot on Martin St. Louis? He'd have to get on his knees to NOT hit him in the head. |

Why do fans of other teams immediately go to the "imagine if it was Crosby" crap? Can't we have a discussion based on a hit on its own? - rival22
Sure. But that was from a coach. |

Predatory hit... Probably a hair late. To me, it's not a "good" hit that needs to be in the game, but based on past precedent, not sure worthy of supplemental discipline. Probably should have just been a penalty.
What is stupid is that the only reason that the league is looking at it is because Jagr didn't return. If he gets right up and plays the next shift, likely no hearing. |

I think most of NJ considers PDB more of a fan than a coach at this point. Twitter was full of some fun comments about the man yesterday. |

Whaaaaaaa! that hit was too hard. If Jagr doesn't watch his pass and pays attention to whats going on around him, he avoids the hit and Bortuzzo crashes into the boards. The hit was perfectly fine. Sometimes you are going to get hit in the head playing hockey. Bortuzzo kept his elbow down, lead with the shoulder, did not come from the blindside and did not leap up to target the head. Textbook body check. |

Rule 48 - Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.
48.2 Minor Penalty - For violation of this rule, a minor penalty shall be assessed.
48.3 Major Penalty - There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule.
48.4 Game Misconduct Penalty – There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule.
48.5 Match Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion.
48.6 Fines and Suspensions – Any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under this rule, in either regular League or playoff games, shall be suspended automatically for the next game his team plays. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28). |

How is a late hit to the head a textbook body check in 2014? Ironic a Flyers fan has to say this, but stop living in the 70s. |

OK. If the referee thinks that the head was hit - 48.2 Minor Penalty - For violation of this rule, a minor penalty shall be assessed.
End of story. i love how people think you can play in the NHL and you will be able to not get hit in the head. It happens, a player is bent over, a taller player hits a shorter player, there are many situations where someone will get hit in the head. If we are going to cry and wring hands about it, then remove body checking from the game.
Bortuzzo's hit should be a teaching video on how to throw a hit in hockey. Lead with the shoulder, feet on the ice, not from behind or blindside.

If you read the full rule, it takes into account the player putting himself into a vulnerable position ("a player is bent over, a taller player hits a shorter player", as you said). It is when a player deliberately delivers a hit aimed toward the head where the rule is enforced. Please tell me when delivering a hit targeted at the head is an acceptable, clean hockey play. |
